BEST BAND EVER: Results!

Were we supposed to be voting for the most talented guitarist as part of the most talented band ever game?

No, you're supposed to vote for the better guitarist overall. Which Lane and Abasi are compared to Walsh, Tremonti or McCready.

Besides solos I'm also going for songwriting and/or other musical capacities such as riffing. Basically, anything that can be appealing and that has to do with music.

Are you suggesting this is a weak point for Lane or Abasi? Range of musical capabilities?

I don't think we can avoid going on personal preference in this game, they're all good guitarists, just playing different styles. We're picking who we'd want in our own band. Incidentally, I can't wait to see what kind of Frankenband emerges from this game. The members could be totally incompatible.

No, you're supposed to vote for your least favourite guitarist. Or, as NP put it,

I don't differentiate between best and favorite, my answer to mckindog stands. What makes Lane and Abasi stand out aren't their technical skill. It's what they do with that skill. I voted Malmsteen until he was out, clearly that's not my criteria.

Of course not, that's not what I'm suggesting people should do anyway. The thing is, I suspect Lane and Abasi being voted out so early has more to do with unfamiliarity, rather than taste. The guitarist of Pearl Jam should not be beating one of the greatest fusion guitarists of all-time, and the guy who may be the most innovative guitarist of the 21st century.

I think it's obvious to everyone that the situation would have been completely different had the poll been positive, i.e. voting for your favorite guitarist. But the way things are right now, it's to be expected that (un)familiarity is a major factor.

That's what I have a problem with. It's not fair to vote guitarists out simply because you're not familiar with them. Perhaps the survivor method is not suitable for this game?

The only thing I have remembered reading about Lane is that he is fast. For the rest I don't remember any enthousiasm or video shared on this forum on either him or Abasi, before this game started. They suddenly popped up here.

Any specific track you'd like to recommend from these guys? I'll surely have a listen. Important to me will be the style of music. However good someone is, if their music is not to my liking -trying to be polite here-, the person will not have a chance. And that is why I ABSOLUTELY will differentiate between best and favourite. This is my choice, and not the choice of a neutral (yeah right) guitarist expert with unconfirmed opinion. So it's going to be subjective. This IS about having personal favourites. By focusing on who I like best, the ones who are liked the least are getting a vote.

You have a point that "unknown" people deserve to be investigated. If it's too late for now, and if they turn out more interesting than I thought, then at least one of these guys, or both, will have gained more interest.

For Shawn Lane, check out the album Personae by Jonas Hellborg. Pretty much all of his work consists of playing in Jonas Hellborg's jazz fusion trio. For Tosin Abasi, check out the album The Joy of Motion by Animals as Leaders. That's his band. Just one track won't showcase their capabilities, but if you want a taster from each:

There was no need for you to go off this tangent, since I have no problem with this. I just suspected a lot of the people who voted out Lane and Abasi hadn't even heard their music. If you listen to them and think it's trash, that's your prerogative. Do listen first though, that's all I'm saying.

It's hardly a suspicion. NP has said several times he's voting for guitarists simply because he's never heard of them. Add Foro, who stated earlier (I think) that he'd also never heard of Lane, and that's two people for a start that have no idea who Shawn Lane is. That's fine. Kind of a pointless game though with this many guitarists. Who's familiar with them all? I doubt anyone.

I said a long time ago I didn’t have time to check out guys I didnt know so they went out right after the guys I don’t like.
I checked out Lane and Abasi after this blew up.

Very talented, and in Abasi’s case, groundbreaking.
Their music didn’t click with me. No regrets.

It is. I'm familiar with pretty much every guitarist here, although I've only heard one Dick Dale song (Misirlou, thanks to Pulp Fiction) and one Al Di Meola song (Midnight Tango, thanks to Foro's instrumentals game).

Voting for Hendrix, Jon Roth, and Prince. They're good, but not THAT good.

But guys, seriously, if Randy Rhoads doesn't make it into the final round...

Familiar with everyone here, though I'm going to look up some more stuff from the ones I'm less familiar with before voting.
