Currently, this is the closest battle for survival:

Images and Words — Dream Theater 4 vote(s)
Night of the Stormrider — Iced Earth 4 vote(s)
Vulgar Display of Power — Pantera 4 vote(s)

Looks like I was quite right in saying that Vulgar would do pretty well in the heavy concurrence it landed in. I didn't expect it would beat Nirvana though! I hope it can beat Images and Words, but I find Night of the Stormrider the best of these three.

My pick for the two best ones of this era: Night of the Stormrider + Dirt.

All the "new" albums ('90s-King Animal) sans Innuendo and Dirt.

I guess I'm in the minority, but Innuendo is one of my favorites from the entire list.

I think it has a brilliant opening track and closer and one or two fine other songs. The rest I don't find that great, way too happy/airy for my taste.

Yeah, if I rated all the songs, it wouldn't look like such a great album. But I love its "feel." You can't listen to that album and not be suddenly happy. :p

That's pretty much my take too.
It's kinda weird because I know that album well and like it, but it loses points because I also know its flaws.
I'm not nearly as familiar with Stormrider and Images and Words, but I'm giving them a pass because overall they seem to be more consistent. I don't want to dump something because I haven't listened to it enough. I know Innuendo well enough to know it does not deserve to make the playoffs.

Never been a big fan of Countdown To Extinction or Vulgar Display Of Power. Images And Words is definitely the best one of those.

If this was a school yard, Images & Words and Countdown would be running off frightened to tell Priest about the big bad bully, Vulgar Display :D

I'd say the drums and guitars by the Abbott brothers are very refined.
Together they formed a tandem with a unique own style and sound. Very rhythmic stuff. Challenging stuff but at the same time it keeps you on the edge of your seat. Dream Theater hardly does that.

Both Mustaine and Anselmo don't have the most pleasant voices but Mustaine is really hard to bear because he tries to sing and he just can't. It sounds like whining. When I hear that voice I think of a crying teenager who can't have his third ice cream of the day.

I love Anselmo's vocals personally. He is like one of the best screamers in groove/thrash hardcore metal there ever was. Hundreds of modern day bands try to imitate him...

And his voice isn't very loud in the mix. It's mostly these awesome guitars and drums dominating the spectrum.

It is right where it needs to be in the mix. Absolutely the music carries it - but you wouldn't be able to find a better vessel for the lyrics and pure power of the music than Anselmo...It is a perfect match. That is why everything changed when he joined the group and they made Cowboys From Hell

They made an album before that with Anselmo so the magic didn't happen immediately. It was the change of style that did it I guess.
