After a bit of a dip with NPFTD, we're back with a brilliant album. It is severely underrated, gets a ton of hate, yet it's still in my top 5. The artwork is iconic. The production has a unique atmosphere setting it apart and making it one of the more unique sounding records, just like SIT too. There's almost this constant air of mystery all over the album and I adore that.
This song is an oddity on many levels. First of all, it's in G minor, neat little tidbit. It's arguably one of the most aggressive and thrash-iest Maiden songs. Break neck speed, killer scream, vicious vocals, the song has it all. Bruce's voice practically drips with poison in the verses. We get a bit more melody and a couple of vocal harmonies in the chorus, before going for the post chorus section. The song generally has a rather unorthodox structure for a short rocker.
Funnily enough the "watch" in the first chorus sounds almost as if he's singing "what's"; it's better on the second chorus. We get a couple of solos after the second chorus. Janick's style is a bit more refined compared to the previous album and it feels as if there's a bit more purpose behind his choices, or at least more than previously heard. Dave's great as always. Quick reprise of the chorus and an abrupt ending to finish the song. No sense in endlessly dragging it out; they said what they had to say. Great little tune, something not really heard in that way by Maiden up to that point and a strong start to the album, I give it an 8.
