A Matter of Life and Death

Who else loves this album? I think its severely underrated, theres no bad tracks on it IMO (although I haven't really been able to get into The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg, Lord of Light, and Brighter than a Thousand Suns). Its my third favourite IM album (after Powerslave and Piece of Mind), and I think its the best from the 00's maiden. I really like the lyrics and the way they are sang on These Colours Don't Run, For the Greater Good of God and The Longest Day. What are your thoughts on this album?

Thanks but I already checked that board and it didn't seem very active, and I didn't want to res an old thread. :) Besides, someone posted a discussion about No Prayer for the Dying a little further down  :smartarse:

It's an amazing album. Maybe people are put off by the overtly Christian lyrics throughout, but it doesn't really bother me. In terms of the actual music, it is definitely one of their very best. My favourite track has to be The Legacy.

Nothing wrong with posting here. However, it's OK to post in old threads in the Commentary forums.

Great album AMOLAD. Lord of Light, Brighter, The Legacy, These Colours  :yey:

The album is a test to sit through from start to finish though...Thats my only "beef" with this album, Steves song structure gets just a wee bit too repetetive here. Many of the songs would have beniffited from starting out fast and getting right into it. Instead of sitting through 3 or 4 mins of "building the song up" when there was no need to do so...

But yeah I think its a toss between this and Brave New World for their best 00s output.

When I got the album in 2008 (took me 2 years for some strange reason) I immediatly loved it. I think I like TFF more and heres why, as previously stated, there are too many buildups. TFF has those build ups but keeps them intresting. MOM has a slow intro but it picks up rather quickly. IOA is just cooler than all the AMOLAD intros (except maybe LOL) and The Talisman changes it up every now and again. TFF takes all the best parts of AMOLAD and replaces all the bad parts with good and makes what I think is the perfect album and I can't see them topping that. The biggest problem with AMOLAD is the buildups just take too long and then the songs start to get very repetetive. The Longest day is probally the worst. However, the amazing middle section saves it. The last 4 tracks (ROBB, FTGGOG, LOL, and The Legacy) are probally my favorites on the album. FTGGOG gets a repetetive at times but there is something about that song I just love. LOL is just epic and the most unique and has awesome lyrics(taken to the next level with starblind) and the legacy is just pure epic. Cut the acoustic intro down a notch and it is perfect. The only real weak song imo is the pilgrim but I guess that's what happens when you put it after BTATS. I do like this album more than BNW though.

My post in this topic (Perfect Album For Each Era: BNW, DOD, AMOLAD) showed how much I like the majority of this album:

01. Dance Of Death
02. These Colours Don’t Run
03. Ghost Of The Navigator
04. Brighter Than A Thousand Suns
05. The Reincarnation Of Benjamin Breeg
06. The Pilgrim
07. The Legacy
08. Brave New World
09. Lord Of Light
10. Paschendale

6 songs from AMOLAD, but I do not necessarily find these the best ones from this top 10. In fact I find the songs from BNW and DOD better, all four of 'em. My biggest doubt was The Legacy: it just won from The Mercenary (11), The Wicker Man (12) and Rainmaker (13). I have trouble making a fine order because I like to mix the different album songs, but it's quite hard when I have 6 of one album and there are so many epics.

Yes, I prefer the 4 songs in red and blue but then come the 6 songs which beat all the others songs from BNW, DOD and AMOLAD:

These Colours Don’t Run
Brighter Than A Thousand Suns
The Reincarnation Of Benjamin Breeg
The Pilgrim
The Legacy
Lord Of Light

Very solid songs. I'd give them an 8 or 9. Not lower.

However, I also see negative aspects: the choruses of The Longest Day and For the Greater Good of God (initially my favourite song!) are not my favourites, and I also find Different World average.

Weakest Maiden album, still has 5 fantastic songs: (DW, BTATS, TP, OOTS & TROBB), bad arrangement and predictable, repetitive parts if removed could've made this a really strong album, but instead, it's only long and boring. Lyrics are superb, though.

For three years, it was my favourite Maiden album, partly because it was the first Maiden album that I first heard when it was new.  It's still among my favourites, along with four other albums.  A few songs that I loved at first have not aged that well: The Longest Day and FTGGOG, which others also mentioned.  Then again, my opinion of some other songs has risen over the years: These Colours Don't Run, Lord of Light, Brighter than a Thousand Suns.  It still feels like the most coherent Maiden album after Seventh Son and it's much more than the sum of its parts.  Also, like Jeff said, the lyrics are superb.

Really? I love the intro first few verses to Longest Day. The tune sends shivers down my spine  :edmetal:

if it was only one verse it would be ok. The biggest problem I have is the chorus.

have fun with that

Still holding top spot as my favorite Maiden album, AMOLAD consistently bowls me over at every playing. The Legacy gets the nod from me as top tune, with BTATS right up there with it. The Legacy is the jewel in Janick's crown. The weakest track, Different World, is still a good rocker.... all killer no filler. Were I a betting man, money would be placed on TFF ascending to my top spot, but even after 4 months of heavy rotation, I still haven't fully digested the album...

there ran by a rich cult that owns everything if they dont write for them they dont work. there are three women that tap someones brain and they torture them for years. they can read there mind with a computer chip and talk in to there head pretending to be the satan or an alien. they use up there life and make the media write from there pain. so the band called them selfs iron maiden a torture chamber. eddie is one of the old ladys. the cult color is blue i have been tortured for 5 years so far and they have been looking threw my eyes for a decade. like being john melkavich how ever you spell that. you can see and here the truth in the media if you look carfully. free bird is when the captive is set free the wickerman is maidens way of singing about the sacrafice the cover of number of the beast shows charlotte controlling the devil because she makes pretend to be the devil to her victoms they are always sang about witchy lady green eyed lady, the beatels are big players john talks about doing the ritual and paul selling out, they call here mother also floyds another brick in the wall says alot, hotel california is a song about them being in the game and you cant never leave. maiden is no diffrent but i have noticed they are better then the rest of the stars they dont completly sell out. they stay off the radio and only do what they have to to keep playing. i wont sell out to keep my mouth shut and they wont let me go.it is hell let me tell you they are old old rich people and they are very evil. any questions i can write a book about it but i cant write. lol
