Got back home late last night. I'd like to thank you all for a great time at my first Maidenfans meet-up. Hopefully we can get together again sometime!

I got home at about half past midnight. In my tired and ill state I forgot to take my passport out of my shorts pocket and this morning put my shorts in the washing machine. That's another £80 and a second new passport in a year.

That's exactly what I did when I got home from Europe.

Maidenfans in Oslo, 2016

Tuesday I had the pleasure of being picked up by Wingman (our Norwegian host) and Black Wizard who landed an hour earlier. Wingman immediately took us to Ed Force One! He knew where it was parked and found a spot nearby where it was standing calmly.

Then we went to Wingman Hotel. The three of us enjoyed a beer (or two) on the balcony, with a nice view on the hills of eastern Oslo. Shadow and national acrobat (hereafter mentioned as Nush) arrived later by metro. We made sure to buy some food and beer on time and also ordered pizza.

We saw both Euro2016 matches. Austria - Hungary was not that exciting, the goals were pretty good though and afterwards we had fun about some TV producer mistake, giving Austria the Australian flag in the group overview! Later we enjoyed the fact that Portugal didn't win from Iceland. Lots of anti-Ronaldo/Portugal comments filled the room.

Brigantium and her friend Paul called in the evening and it was decided that we would meet them on the next day, the day of the concert! We had fun listening to lots of music (the whole Book of Souls album!) and Wingman's guitar playing.

After an excellent breakfast courtesy of Wingman Hotel we took a walk to the metro:

We arrived in the center ...

The Dutch, the "Noor", the Englishman, the Scot and the Swede

... and met up with Brigs and Paul. It rained the whole day but we did quite some walking through the city nonetheless! We started at the Akershus Fortress, a medieval castle on a hill at the seaside. We enjoyed the view from above, including a huge cruiseship and the harbour and sea.

We had a meal in a bar near the parliament and then walked to the King's palace:

... then through a park and headed for an Irish sports bar, with 55 television screens:

Here we enjoyed Russia - Slovakia and the result (victory for Sloviakia) was most satisfying.

Then it was Maiden time. We took a bus and headed for the Telenor Arena. I bought a tour book and a cap (for my son), thanks to Paul who borrowed me money when I found out my bank card didn't collaborate with the Maiden merch equipment. Then we entered the arena. After most of us entered, we suddenly lost Nush. It turned out he did an attempt to sell the tickets from Perun and Ariana, who sadly did not join us.

The Raven Age passed by and Ghost came on. I didn't like the vocals (highly irritating in some songs even) but the music was nice in most of the show. When they ended, most of us went their own way. Nush and Shadow went forward, and Black Wizard as well. At first I didn't follow, but the place I was standing with Wingman, Brigs and Paul didn't have a good view and more important, was very warm. So I decided to try to get in between the first and second barrier as well. Up to that point, only people with yellow wristbands were allowed and I had some hope that later more people would be allowed, by providing extra wristbands. I wasn't the only one. Security had to keep us at a distance numerous times, to leave an opening for others to get in and out.

Then Doctor Doctor came on, and yes... we could get in! I found a good place on the left corner of the stage (from my view that is), about 11th row. I managed to get a little closer every couple of songs. At the end I was 3rd row! I enjoyed the gig a lot. I had seen them one week earlier in the Netherlands, but that was from a seat with my wife and son.

Personal highlight was a moment during Bruce's intro speech to (setlist spoiler!)
Blood Brothers.
While he talked about the world being a fucked up place (also referring to Orlando) and being glad that we (band and audience) could be together and enjoy ourselves I looked in Adrian's direction. I saw he looked in my direction as well. I put my thumb up towards him and he did it back! Very cool!

After the gig Maidenfans met up and shared experiences. We were lucky to catch the first bus we saw (lots of other people had to wait for next ones). At the central station we got out. Brigantium and Paul said goodbye and the rest of us went to Wingman Hotel, enjoying ourselves again with talk, music and beer. Next morning at 7 o 'clock I was stung by a bumblebee! Laying on my back, I felt something in my neck, realized it was some insect, and tried to remove it. Then it stung. Annoying but not harmful.

The rest of the day was spent on another walk in a different part of the city. First we saw the spectacular new Opera House building. From there we had some nice views.

Later we did some shopping and a beer in a nice bar, with some sort of a garden => Pic 1 next post.

Good weather, excellent company. Then we headed to a bar to watch England - Wales => Pic 2 next post.
The result (a win for England) was not only liked by our Englishman Nush, but the rest of the bar screamed as if Norway won the tournament. I noticed that Norwegians are very pro-England, without exception. Black Wizard and I felt quite alone, supporting the underdog team. ;) Shadow left us after the first half and Black Wizard after the match, to catch their train and plane respectively.

The three of us decided to spend the rest of the day in Wingman Hotel. We watched Germany - Poland and introduced each other to different bands, also trying to see if Wingman liked some black metal. Nush played Windir, and I served some Ancient and old Dimmu Borgor (all three Norwegian black metal bands) and Gates of Ishtar (Gothenburg death metal). Wingman played Rammstein and then proceeded with closing the night with the Judas Priest' Painkiller album. Wingman played along on his guitar, nailing several riffs! Nush was quite tired but still Wingman and myself were surprised that he slept during the title track! :)

The next day (last three pics in next post) started with a fine breakfast again. Wingman had to go to some place and afterwards prepare for a little holiday. So Nush and I said goodbye to him, thanked him a lot for the hospitality and great fun we had. Then the two of us went to the harbour. It rained again. We took a ferry to Bygdoy (peninsula) where we wanted to see the Viking Museum. As soon as we arrived, Nush said that we could also see the (major) ship without buying a ticket. We climbed up a stair and had a good view. We left wihout having explored the rest. To be honest, the weather and high price of the next museum option (the Folk Museum, which is an open air museum) made us decide to head back with the ferry a lot quicker than I had intended. Still, Nush was right on time to catch his Airport Express. After we parted, I wandered a few hours through the center and then took a train (normal one: twice as cheap) to the airport. My plane had a delay of 45 minutes.

Wingman: again thanks a lot that we could stay at your place! It was a pleasure to be in your company and the same goes for all the others I've been with. Cheers!

Yes, generalizing the whole country based on the reactions of our corner of the pub is probably a good idea :p

There are many Norwegian football fans who are directly ABE (Anyone But England), but there are many who usually root for England in tournaments if Norway are not participating (i.e. most times).

But nice review :)

Wiz is so bored that he's:

a) doing crossword puzzles
b) writing a postcard home, or
c) keeping a diary?

I think he's writing a postcard to his mum. He wanted to 'find some tourist shit', including a postcard with the King of Norway on it.
