2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil

You could argue that the Costa Rica keeper was off his line before the penalty was taken during the miss that sent Greece out, but I still think they narrowly deserved to win.

If we rewatch all penalties from the World Cup so far (both regular penalties and from the shootouts) I'm sure we'll find this is the case for the majority of them. Most goalkeepers get off the line and they usually get away with it. I wonder just how many penalties should actually be retaken over the course of a season if the rules were to be enforced strictly ...

- Goalkeeper leaves the line too early: Penalty retaken if he saves
- Penalty taker stops in his run-up: penalty retaken if he scores
- Player from attacking team enters penalty area too early: Retaken if goal is scored
- Player from defending team enters penalty area too early: Retaken if no goal is scored
- Players from both teams entering too early: Penalty retaken regardless.

He seemed to be a little farther out than was the case in the Brazil/Chile game, but I know what you're saying. Strictly speaking it should have been retaken, but it is true that lots of goalies get away with that.

I don't know if that had anything to do with his total lack of emotion during the match. Even when Greece scored in added on time, his reaction was subdued to say the least. He seemed to lack any enthusiasm at all for the match. Wondering if that had anything to do with Greece's below par performance...

I didn't noticed any lack of enthusiasm because i know him, and i think in the 90 minutes, Greece was the better team. Unfortunately, many Greek players are too old and the team has a chronic lack of goal-scoring. For instance, in previous World Cups, Greece had 2-15 overall goals record and in qualification they only scored 12 goals in 10 games, and only 2 wins were with 2 goals advantage. The problem of Greece is that in the past 1o years they could score a second goal and hardly allowed a second one. This time around they are too old and don't have the pace anymore to score a second goal (Karagounis, e.g., was born in 1977!).

Otherwise, Greece was for the very first time in the second stage and a Portuguese coach could be for the very first time in the quarter finals since 1966. Actually in 1966 the field trainer of the Portuguese team was a Brazilian while the off-field manager was a Portuguese, so we can say this could be the very first time a proper in-field Portuguese manager was in the quarter finals. In my personal opinion, he was very enthusiastic and he was even sent off, a rare if not the very first time it happened on his career. Understand he's a very calm, religious person, and he's known for his classic somber face. Many people don't like him because of those features. Last night he was very nervous, not himself in many times.

His contract was not renewed because he wanted to leave. He was recently recognized the best coach in Greece for the last 10 years, so no problems at all there. He left because he said publicly in early February this year he wants to go back to everyday training.

In tonight's other match, Algerie will look for revenge for the 1982 Anschluss in Gijon - the match where West Germany and Austria both knew that they would be through with a 1-0 win for West Germany - and as soon as the score was 1-0 both teams stopped trying to attack.
