18th Studio Album discussion

Do you really think they changed the drummer after so long for just 1 tour?
Yes I do.

That’s why they chose the drummer they chose. They could have gone with the young buck Joe Lazarus or another more profile drummer.

No, instead they’ve chosen a guy nearly as old as them who’s been playing with Steve for more than a decade. This was the obvious choice when a band just needs a step in for one last big tour.

But they (I think Bruce) said that for this tour they wanted to bring back songs they haven't played recently and that they probably wouldn't be played again in the future. The idea is clearly to keep playing. Simon has extended the band's life.

And I never said they’d stop playing.

My thoughts are this will be the last iron maiden tour. They haven’t called it a farewell tour so they can leave the door open to the odd one off gig and maybe a few headline slots at festivals.

With this tour and all other promotions heavily leaning on the 50th anniversary of the band it feels the right time to draw everything to a close.

Bruce said in Helsinki (?) that they won't be going away anytime soon. I don’t see why the band won't go on for five more years.

As far as a new album is concerned, I have had my doubts about that for a few years now. But I really wonder how they decide when to make a new album. Is it all down to Steve (and Bruce?), or does every member have the possibility to veto a new album.

Bruce seems as eager as ever to create music, Adrian also keeps writing. Steve? Maybe he is unsure, but I have never gotten the impression that he doesn’t want to keep making new music. Maybe the rest of the band aren't eager to make another album. Or maybe Nicko's illness put a complete stop to any recording plans. One thing is touring with a new drummer, making new music is a completely different thing. It would really see Maiden head in a different direction.

Unless a new album comes out I really doubt they’ll keep touring. They’ve always said they don’t want to be a cabaret band just playing the hits and since the reunion they’ve been very careful to find good themes as an excuse to go out and do a nostalgia tour in between new album tours.

This run for your lives tour is the first time I feel like there’s no real theme for this tour other than to celebrate 50 years and that is a fitting way to end. I can’t see a brand new nostalgia hits themed tour after this one.

Playing one off gigs and the odd headline festival gig gives them an excuse to play whatever they want from any album without coming up with a new theme to base a whole tour on.

Honestly, I don't think they would have invested in this new stage production for just one tour. If they stay healthy, they might even tour for 10 more years.

The GMETID tour in 2003 had even less of a theme than this one, right? The anniversary is one of the stronger ones.

One could argue that several of the nostalgia tours, regardless of how they were marketed, placed them firmly in the cabaret territory. Nothing wrong with that, I thoroughly enjoyed them and the fact that they were alternating them with tours with a heavy focus on the new albums.

That’s why I loved the nostalgia tours because you always knew a new album and album tour would follow plus I got to see a ton of songs played live on the nostalgia tours that I either hadn’t heard in a very long time or never before.

To truly turn into a cabaret band, and Maiden could easily have done this, would have been to knock out a couple of albums when Bruce and Adrian rejoined then spend the last 20 years just playing hits like Kiss were doing for the last 20 plus years.

Quite genius in my opinion. But we didn’t need that third Maiden England leg.

No ones realistically going to veto recording an album. It's not like they're banging one out every year. It's been 6 years since they've been in a studio together.

There’s levels of cabaretness and Maiden are definitely, and thankfully, not at the Kiss level yet. But let’s not kid ourselves: they have released just 6 studio albums in the 26 years since the reunion took place. That’s not a benchmark of productivity.

True, and I would have liked at least a couple more albums but at least when they did release an album during the reunion they went all in for each release.

They created a new branding and marketing strategy for each album, released new merch and did proper album tours playing around 6/7 new album tracks.

You compare them to say Saxon who have been far more productive on the album front in the same time period but each new tour your lucky to get 2/3 new album songs played and the rest is the same standard greatest hits.

That is true.

That being said, I am glad Saxon will be playing Wheels of Steel in its entirety at the gig I will be attending in November rather than newer stuff.

That is something cool but as much as I love Saxon I’ve never understood why wheels of steel is so revered.

It’s a very good album don’t get me wrong but to me it’s got 3/4 amazing tracks and a lot of filler. If you compare it to other albums released in 1980 it doesn’t get a look in. I mean Iron Maidens debut blows it out of the water. British steel, heaven and hell etc so many great albums released in the same year.

I prefer later saxon if I’m being honest the best period for me is from unleash the beast to inner sanctum but also the last 3 albums have been corkers.

Anyway, I’m moving on from the initial point of the this thread. I personally don’t think Maiden will release a new album.

They will take the run for your lives tour up to the end of 2026. Possibly extend for 1 more year and make a couple of tweaks to the set list but that’s it. Doing this they would have spent 3 years celebrating their 50th anniversary.

I really don’t think they will have the desire to create a new album, new Eddie, a new marketing and branding strategy and then take the new album on the road for another 2/3 years I really don’t.

Maiden will never announce a farewell tour but when the time comes to stop touring they will not leave the last tour they ever did as an album tour, likely they will stop after a hits/nostalgia tour so if they did release a new album in 2027 and tour it till 2030 then another hits tour for 2/3 years that takes them all to around mid 70’s and nearly 60 years of the band.

If they were planning to go on till they reached the 60th anniversary then I doubt they would have made such a big deal of the 50th anniversary with a big documentary and a new book as the story hasn’t finished yet.

This whole thing around the 50th anniversary says to me they are drawing the band to a close and they will go their separate ways and devote time to solo projects and every now and again get together for a one off gig or a festival headline slot.
