Simon Dawson is the new drummer

Article where Bruce says Simon’s style is reminiscent of Clive Burr’s. https://blabbermouth.net/news/bruce-dickinson-says-he-was-pleasantly-shocked-by-iron-maidens-first-rehearsal-with-new-drummer-simon-dawson Assuming Maiden record and release album 18, I hope Nicko is on it. I couldn’t...

    NOW WATCHING

I liked the movie “Companion” more than I expected. Another 20+ year old chat thread. This forum has some kilometers on it. In 2004, my fav movie was the “Dawn of the Dead” remake. “Kill Bill vol 2” was good as well.

Iron Maiden's management: What went wrong?

Oh yeah, I like all the bands I’ve mentioned as well but listen to Maiden, Rush, and Yes far more than the others.

    USA Politics

We’re seeing some Democrat politicians like Gavin Newsom (California’s governor) try to rebrand as a moderate but his track record in office makes that a little difficult. In addition to the executive branch, the Republicans currently hold majority in the Supreme Court (3 Trump appointees from...

    USA Politics

I think there’s a general unease (both internationally and domestically) with how US politics is playing out currently. I’m not sure yet if we’re truly hitting a fundamental political shift or if reality television has simply become reality politics for the current term. In many ways, I don’t...

    USA Politics

I think, in general, when people in the U.S. (my own country) purport to take a strong stand on global geopolitics, it tends to still follow domestic partisan or left/right trends without much stake, identification with, or understanding of a conflict where the U.S. is not a combatant. This is...

    Now Playing (Video Games)

Holy crap, this thread is about 19 years old. Children have been conceived, born, and grown to adulthood in the time since this conversation was started. As a fun exercise, in 2006, I was playing (that I can recall): Hearts of Iron II Red Orchestra Yahoo Chess

Iron Maiden's management: What went wrong?

Another way to look at this is genre popularity. Straightforward 4:4 time, chorus verse, bridge (maybe) format rock typically enjoys more popularity than prog rock does. Metallica, while they have NWOBHM roots pioneered by bands like Maiden (who were really only 3 years ahead in debut album...

    To Tame a Land

I find this one of the more underrated tracks from not just Piece of Mind, but the whole 20th Century Maiden catalog. Thematically and tonally, it would have been a better fit on Powerslave but it concludes Piece of Mind well.

    Darkest Hour

This song’s been stuck in my brain for a few days. “For 6 long years, you shall not pass” I’m a WW2 history nerd, and that line gets me every time. I compare this one in tone and orchestration to “Coming Home,” where Bruce’s vocal range strikes similar melancholy tones.

    Black Sabbath

This Sabbath live in Paris 1970 show for Yorkshire Television is a must watch for any fan. To me, it epitomizes the band at a point where all of the elements that made Sabbath exceptional converge. The 70s production values and simple stage setup put all of the focus on the music. My only...

What number one bands had Janick been in before Maiden?

I thought his breakthrough gig was with Bruce’s solo album Tattooed Millionaire. That in itself seems to be what led to his eventually being asked to join Maiden when Adrian left. It also goes to show where work ethic matters. I’d imagine Bruce saw him as a solid known quantity when the second...

    What’s Steve thinking here?

Is that Dennis Stratton standing with Steve? If so, Steve’s probably thinking “Keep off the mixing board, you. Wants it to sound like Queen … bollocks!”

    Best Live Album?

Beast over Hammersmith is my favorite. But Live after Death was among the first Maiden albums I’d heard back when I first started listening to them in 1986 and I have to credit it for making me a lifelong fan.

Iron Maiden's management: What went wrong?

I know Sabbath’s only being compared incidentally here but, during their original lineup decade or so in the 70s, even Iommi started to chase trends. This is why Sabotage, while containing genre influencing tracks like “Symptom of the Universe,” sounded so different and more mid-70s heavy rock...

    Rush

Neil Peart was the best drummer, in my opinion, of the entire prog rock movement. A true generational talent. That said, John Rutsey still played the hell out of the drums on the first album.

    Now Playing (Video Games)

I spent entirely too much time playing the WW2 team based video game Hell let Loose. What makes it great: sticks to some baseline authenticity with WW2 weapons, vehicles and (slightly sanitized in the case of Germany) uniforms. Is set up for cooperative 50 v 50 team based gameplay where voice...

Iron Maiden's management: What went wrong?

I’d argue they never went wrong despite not being as mainstream or grossing as much total revenue as Metallica. Look at Maiden’s longevity and ability to consistently fill arenas globally on long tours that feature both new material and classics. Maiden has achieved success in cross-channel...
