Hard to top the variety of King Crimson (featured here are wild jazz rock with apocalyptic lyrics, a soft beautiful jazzy ballad, an intense prog metal instrumental, and a complex but accessible, witty 80s pop song):

The overly-percussive note Harris plays at 3:06 in The Duellists - attacking the strings a bit too hard. It gives the song character.
