I agree the Rock in Rio version is outstanding, even though it could have been even better with H playing his solo.

That's the one part where I find the studio version jarring, probably because I've listened to the live versions (especially RIR and DOTR) hundreds of times. That line works really well when he drags it out and gives it some room to breathe, in my opinion.
 
I'll be the first to admit that I'm not coordinated or sharp enough to keep more than one beat. But this was... not very good.

Yeah, saw the video this morning. He really sucked at it. Shame they didn't give this song a more elaborate attempt - it was basically just a "trainwreck" playthrough. Also, he really hadn't heard Hallowed Be Thy Name before??
 
I'm a big fan of that format on Drumeo. There have been some truly fascinating episodes. I was ready to defend the dude, prior to watching.

Unfortunately it really wasn't good. He never really tried getting a feel for the song. He just went at it (not necessarily a bad thing) but didn't really adjust or try new stuff (that's the bad thing). There were some drum grooves that he played for literal minutes.

Wasn't a good fit.

Suddenly Simon doesn't seem quite as bad, does he? :D
 
Yeah, I prefer watching the drummers who block it out and do multiple takes before settling on one. Nic Collins doing Opeth, Kenny Aronoff doing Yes, Linda-Philomène Tsoungui doing Rush, some banger vids there.
 
I didn't mind it. He totally missed most of the nuance in the song but his comments at the end helped, he admitted that he didn't get it and encouraged the new musicians to just play, make mistakes, have fun. Not a masterclass but a likable chap.

Absolutely need Nicko to do one of these.

And the Janet Jackson drummer doing Dream Theater and the guy from Cirque Du Soleil doing Smashing Pumpkins. Impressive stuff.
