Adrian, Janick and Dave's guitars and Steve's basses

While we wait for more news, I’m curious to know what your favorite guitars of Davey's and Adrian's are (Janick too if you want, though there's less to choose from there!). Feel free to pick one or two if you're really struggling to decide. And most importantly, why?

Personally, for Davey, it's the white 1988 ESP. Out of the dozens of bootlegs I've heard, that's my favorite tone. Also the red '90s Jackson, but purely for aesthetics.
For Adrian, the cream HSS Strat he used from 2000 to 2008. For Brave New World and Sign of the Cross at Rock in Rio 2001.

Over to you!

Janick: Original 1964 black Stratocaster, Blackie (1964 replica), White Spirit Strat

I have a question regarding Davey's switch to Seymour's from DiMarzio's. Does his contract stop him from using other pickup brands, because I don't think he has had a Super Distortion equipped guitar on stage since 2010??

Impossible to know. Now that SD have put out Dave Murray pickguard, maybe. But before that, I highly doubt it. I think his switch was mainly sound related (JBs have alnico magnets and are therefore smoother) and the switch to Hot Rails might have something to do with Maiden becoming a 3 guitar band (Hot Rails are more focused).

Janick's Gillan Strats has Hot Rails in it, so he was most likely aware of them for quite some time. Also, one of his White Strats that he used on the X-Factour had 3 hot rails in it as well, I think it was either 3-tone sunburst or the blue sunburst one that he had refinished during that time.

I'm going to assume that he probably felt like trying something new, kind of like Slash who recently switched to Magnatone amps from Marshalls.

He probably tried them when Janick was using them, but before 1999 he was only using them for specific things. I'm almost sure he went with them in 1999 because of 3 guitars in the band. Hot Rails have more concentrated frequency range, since their sound picking range is much smaller than the one of the classic humbucker. Remember, first few shows of Ed Huntour were still the cream HSS Strat and the Jackson. The switch only occured later.

DAVE
  • Kossoff Strat, which I would call the Iron Maiden guitar. Perfect balance between tradition and innovation. Also an unsung early example of Super Strat.
  • Black Strat he used from 1999 to 2008, basically a more modern take on the Kossoff Strat.
  • Black HSH Strat he got in 2015 and used for TBOS. The one with the 70s-style headstock.
ADRIAN
  • 1986 Jackson MIDI San Dimas, mostly for its uniqueness in IM rack and because it fit perfectly the futuristic aesthetic of Somewhere in Time.
  • Jackson Adrian Smith San Dimas Signature (first series), black pickguard, also quite honestly the only signature model of his that I like, at least aesthetically... not a fan of the full-white one, and as to the new series — I get that flashier colours like golden and green probably have more appeal but it's just not for me.
  • Lado Earth Black, also for the distinctive design. As he said, both Janick and Dave play super Strats (and always have been) so it's nice to have a refreshing touch in terms of body shapes.
JANICK
  • Blackie (the replica), always loved the combination of black body, rosewood fingerboard, and black hardware. I was glad they FINALLY did a signature series last year. I also like a nice road worn finish (tho it maybe could use a restyle now), personally I think that in 2008-2012 it looked absolutely gorgeous.
  • Union Jack Strat, the one with natural finish, maple neck and 70s headstock that he used in the Holy Smoke video.
  • Sandberg California vintage white. It was nice to FINALLY see him with something different. I guess I should have said the Epiphone Les Paul then, but I don't like the HHH configuration. Tho I understand the charm.
