Some of my post-concert thoughts for Arnhem.
The setlist is pretty well thought out and clever. I especially enjoyed the dynamics. There's a long, general buildup towards the high Bs and above in the vocals, which is an important aspect of what makes this setlist resemble a musical composition.
Bruce is still unbelievable. He was struggling after 2015, could still sing the high notes, but his timbre was gone. Already last year, I felt like his voice had healed, and on this tour, he's even better.
Among the three guitarists, Dave is my man. He played some beautiful solos, with a lot of life experience and soul.
Simon's drumming is very different, but he understands Steve, that's obvious. I suspect the two of them practiced the Maiden stuff together before the tour as well. Has Simon talked about how he prepared for the tour? He was especially great in the more intricate stuff like "Rue Morgue" and "Phantom", but he's not quite as fluent as Nicko yet. The drums were also too loud and boomy, especially the bass drum and the toms. This drowned out Steve, who had a somewhat hollow sound. And I miss the ride.
But it was too loud in general. Too fucking loud! And the acoustics weren't great either. I'm one of the few people who prefer Maiden to play outside, where they always sound better.
I bought the event shirt. The shirt's main part, indicating its event-ness, looks great, but it's on the back. I wish it was on the front, with no picture on the back. I even tried to wear it the other way around, but it doesn't work! (So sad.)
Overall: Sorry if I focused too much on the negatives. I think Maiden are at a peak at the moment, performance-wise.
