The MAIDEN Years: 2018/19/20/21/22/ad infinitum (Rock in Rio and Nights of the Dead)

Looking ahead to seeing the band again in a couple of months, I cranked up Senjutsu in my car the other day, and was really reminded of when the album was first released. It seems odd for me to have had the album for so long and yet not seen any of the material performed live yet. I mentioned...

    When the Wild Wind Blows

Raymond Briggs, illustrator and author of 'When the Wind Blows' (amongst numerous other classics), has died aged 88: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2022/aug/10/snowman-author-raymond-briggs-dies-aged-88

    Cradle of Filth

The recent remaster of Cruelty and the Beast is excellent. I'm listening to their latest release Existence is Futile now. I have not paid very close attention to the band for almost 20 years now, but am struck by how they've managed to maintain a very consistent sound despite an incredible...

    Bathory

Are you a fan of the 'Nordland' albums? It seems strange to think that they will be two decades old this year. I remember in the few years that followed his passing, rumours abounded that a vast trove of unreleased treasures sat in the Black Mark archives. Then the '..In Memory of Quorthon'...

    Bathory

Listening through Bathory's first six albums again, I'm struck by what a remarkable band this is. A one-man project which essentially created a new subgenre of music of music with each release between 1984-1991, and an eternal source of inspiration. I'm particularly hooked on 'Twilight of the...

    Black Metal

This was a big one for me in terms of learning about different bands & putting their releases in context. I remember looking at the photographs & album artwork for Isengard in particular and trying to guess what the music might sound like. Introduction to BM- 'Emperial Live Ceremony' live album...

    Manowar

So they're releasing these online as opposed to on physical media? I remember that Manowar's DVD output was very impressive in the mid-00s, but Hell on Earth V was pretty disappointing, despite the fact that it features one of the shows I attended.

    Queensryche & Geoff Tate

Yeah, as I said earlier in the thread, I wasn't aware that there had been another fall out. Certainly not good for credibility. I see that GT is playing at a fairly tiny venue near me next year, so will try to attend. Playing two classic albums back to back every night is certainly no mean feat.

    Queensryche & Geoff Tate

I think that whilst it was a bit of a 'quick win' for the band to claim a return to their metal roots in 2013 after all of the nonsense of the past decade, the sound that they've arrived at is not really comparable to any previous era of the band's output. Of course, the albums are still...

    Queensryche & Geoff Tate

Interesting- are you referring to live performances or studio releases from GT? I must say that I didn't enjoy anything from what I heard of the 'Operation Mindcrime' band. I'd quite like to see him live next year, though. On the other hand, whilst I do like the post 2013 version of...

    Queensryche & Geoff Tate

:applause:for summoning a slightly obscure Rambo quote at quick notice! Reading this thread, I wasn't aware that there had recently been a third 'Ryche schism. Surely a contender for the world's most dysfunctional band.

    Queensryche & Geoff Tate

I always like to listen to Queensryche in November/December. Great to see ‘Tribe’ getting a few positive mentions- to me, it’s a bright spot in a pretty dreadful run of albums, and a CD I can easily listen to on repeat.

    Wacken Open Air nostalgia

I'd noticed the slow tendency towards 'tourist' fans in 2008, and can imagine that things have gotten worse since then. Although it's a good documentary, the lengthy feature on Wacken in 'Metal- A Headbanger's Journey' seems to have quickly added to its fame. Although I first went in 2004, I...

    Wacken Open Air nostalgia

I attended the Wacken festival over five years from 2004-2008, spanning my late teens to early 20s. I've recently been getting very nostalgic about my trips there- they represent a period of youthful freedom that I'll likely never experience again. I made some friends for life there, and have...

    Manowar

I'm glad to hear it, and I don't doubt that they will always be a force of nature in a live setting. I'm referring more to the endless stream of half-baked full length albums & stopgap EPs, confusing PR, announcements for projects that don't transpire, unnecessary re-recordings of classics and...
