Diesel 11's Maiden Rankings

Not sure about the high position of The Book of Souls Live, given that it's just a hastily-cropped tour poster (and not even a good one - could they have not used the Eddie-cuts-out-own-heart-in-jungle poster?)
I dunno, I like the look and feel of it.

Piece of Mind bellow Virtual XI.... Hard to swallow.
and Number of the Beast....beyond belief.
Like I said, that's where it can literally go anyway. POM has always been a lesser '80s album for me, and TNOTB has started revealing its weaknesses, whereas there isn't a single bad track on VXI. But I'd have to do a lot more listening to figure this out.

But going by the full list itself, tallying up where the songs rank, the albums would be as follows:
  1. Powerslave = 36.63
  2. Somewhere In Time = 39.25
  3. Seventh Son of a Seventh Son = 45.38
  4. The Number of the Beast = 64.89
  5. Piece of Mind = 69.89
  6. The X Factor = 73.91
  7. Virtual XI = 78
  8. Fear of the Dark = 79.17
  9. Dance of Death = 81.91
  10. Brave New World = 85.8
  11. The Book of Souls = 87.09
  12. A Matter of Life and Death = 92.3
  13. No Prayer For The Dying = 99.5
  14. Killers = 122.73
  15. Iron Maiden = 131.11
  16. The Final Frontier = 131.8
Though this is of course based solely on the songs. Other than Powerslave being first, this list is horseshit.

Como Estais Amigos at third. You must go crazy during Blaze Bayley live shows when he play that!

I would if I went. :p

I've never been to a concert in my life but Maiden and Blaze are two at the top of my list in future.

I hope you get to see them both one day! Our Maiden preferences differ wildly, and that's cool (just not a Blaze fan, sorry).

Curious. What was your first exposure to Maiden? Mine was Killers. That was the album that made me fall in love with Maiden and will always be held in high regard with me (noticed you rank it last, lol.) Killers does seem to be a much maligned album around here.

So I guess the moral here is "to each his/her own", right?

My first exposure to Maiden was on a list of the 66 greatest metal songs ever (a list is always something that'll draw me in, and this one kickstarted my love of metal). TNOTB, Hallowed, Trooper, and RTTH were ranked 66, 38, 38, and 3 on there, respectively. This was my exposure, but it wasn't until I started really listening to metal and gave RTTH a shot by itself that I fell in love with them. At the time, I was still a big Beatles and Zeppelin fan, but Megadeth and Maiden managed to round off my list at 3 and 4, respectively.

It wasn't until I listened to all of Maiden that they really grew on me. As you can see from this thread, I wasn't a very big fan of BNW and such but did enjoy SIT a lot more than I do now. TXF and VXI I didn't hate (I certainly liked Blaze), but I didn't find them outstanding. Same with IM and Killers. Somehow I really fell in love with the Blaze era and they continue to grow on me. Di'Anno's okay, but I'm really not the biggest fan of the albums he was on. All three vocalists are great at what they do, though, it's just a matter of the material they had to work with.

So yeah. This explains my love of RTTH (I nearly cried at how awesome the chorus was back when I first heard it). As for Empire of the Clouds, I heard it before I heard all of TBOS and from the very first listen it already entered my Top 3. It's only been a little while now that I've accepted it as my favorite song of all time and I doubt it'll fall from that position any time soon.

Your list also helped me find something that I've always wanted to know, but was too lazy to check by myself. "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner" is the longest title on any Maiden song ever. :p

Along with "The Thin Line Between Love And Hate" ;)

Run to the hills the third greatest metal song ever?:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:

It's not that hard to pick a group of songs that could be classified as the best in the metal genre. I can narrow it down to the following:

Metallica - Master of Puppets
Slayer - Raining Blood
Iron Maiden - Rime of the Ancient Mariner / Hallowed Be Thy Name
Black Sabbath - War Pigs / Iron Man

These are all songs that helped the metal genre forward in one way or another and are good songs to build off of in further spelunking through the genre.

Master of Puppets has shit production..... I hate listening to the studio versions of that album because of it. The live album/footage from 1989 in Seattle blows the studio stuff out of the water, even Ride the Lightning (my only liked metallica album)

my favorite thrash album of 1986 and in general is Darkness Descends so I'm kinda bias to mainstream albums from the big 4 when lesser known bands made more kickass albums.... I think that list you mentioned is more like the 66 most well known metal songs... RTTH is the only Maiden song I've ever heard on radio today

Yeah, it's more of an overview of popular stuff. Lemme see if I can find the list...

So now I'm going to go through the commentary boards again and re-vote again. Speaking of which, I've finally come up with a system I like. Based on this list:

1-30: 10/10
31-60: 9/10
61-90: 8/10
91-121: 7/10
122-139: 6/10
140-144: 5/10
145-148: 4/10
149-151: 3/10
152-153: 2/10
154-155: 1/10

So that's that.
