The Hip-Hop Thread

Just gave that album a spin three days ago, Sixes. Lyrically it's up there with any hiphop album I've heard but musically it's not quite up there for me. Still a 4 star album at worst, though.

I wasn't really surprised to hear them. Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) is one of my favorite albums of all time and martial arts interludes are all over that album. It's Wu-Tang's "thing". The name itself comes from there, a lot of their song titles come from there, hell, Ghostface Killah's name comes from a Kung-fu movie.

Yeah, but for me Liquid Swords is one of my first Hip-Hip encounters back in 98 or so before I even knew what Wu-Tang meant :D

I found GZA Liquid Sword first...then I found WuTang.

Who is the shook ones??!

Son, they shook...
'cause ain't no such things as halfway crooks
scared to death, scared to look
they shook
'cause ain't no such things as halfway crooks
scared to death, scared to look

I absolutely loved Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer back in the day. I'm pretty big on the Beastie Boys and Insane Clown Posse. I do dig some old school NWA and Snoop Dog and Dr. Dre as well.

I can definitely understand this sentiment. Even for me, as someone who's very picky about hip hop and doesn't like the genre all that much, that's a hell of an album.

However, is here anyone who'd help me with Public Enemy appreciation? Just this morning I've been listening to Fear of a Black Planet again and although there are some undeniable pros:

+ the production is really great and obviously a lot of work went into it - the album has this intense, "oppresive" sound that's really quite unique
+ I definitely respect the political "black supremacist" thing, it's a ballsy album overal
+ connected with that - the lyrics are definitely good, though I'm a sucker for Eminem, so I don't know whether I'm entitled to judge :D
+ Fight the Power is amazing

the absolutely game-killing con is the fact the album has 20 songs and they all sound the same - honestly, I can't quite tell where one song begins and another one ends. It's just an "oppresive" hour, but I've heard the album, like, 30 times and still can't remember pretty much anything bar FtP and the title track.

However, for the stereotypical "walking around blasting hip hop from the boombox on your shoulder", I can't imagine a better album

Not sure you're looking for too much help here. Overall it sounds like you're having a lot of enjoyment out of this album, even if some of the tracks might sound siumilar and you have to listen to the lyrics to distinguish them...

I do know what you mean though. Hip-hop albums have a tendency to be overtly long in general. And well, not everything on a 1 hour record are gonna be mind blowing-good. As metal listeners we might think about a particular section from a song as being particularly well-written. Likewise one hip-hop verse might be exceptionally well-written and performed, others might not!
