Disappointment in "Give 'Em Ed" U.S. show (2003)

Having seen spoilers for the 2003 "Give 'Em Ed" US tour, I was very excited, as I'd get a chance to see some Maiden classics that I had not seen before, such as Die With Your Boots On, Revelations and 22 Acacia Avenue. However, when I saw the US show, I was somewhat disappointed, largely because they chopped off several songs, including 22AA, which is one of my favorite Maiden tunes. The show only wound up being an hour and a half. If I remember, Maiden blamed curfews for the short set, but for the Chicago show I attended, they were done at least 20 minutes before the curfew. Has anyone heard any other reason why the US shows got stiffed?

Also, I was very disappointed in the fact they did not do an extensive US run for Dance of Death, which had some of the better songs Maiden had done, including the title track and Paschendale. At least I got to see Dance of Death played live during the pre-Final Frontier tour in 2010.

Bloody great tour that was...Saw em on both legs of that tour, Give Me Ed' and the actual album tour.

I saw the Give Me Ed show at Roskilde 03:

:)

Classic Bruce speech!!

Seriously? 12 years later? OK...

You were "disappointed" because the show was "only" 90 minutes? Were you ever promised more? I know I wasn't.

It wasn't a curfew in Denver, it was a noise law (these are different things). Our concert ran up very close to the limit ... after all, there were two great support acts (Motorhead and Dio).

Compared to the European setlist, Denver 'missed' 22, Brave New World and Bring Your Daughter. I never considered it to be a 'miss'... the band couldn't legally have played longer if they wanted to. On the other hand, the set they did play was fucking awesome, so I never felt I had reason to complain.

Disappointment?!?!? Hell no. One of the best Maiden shows I ever saw. You have to be feeling pretty damn entitled to come out of that show disappointed.

Nah I like this. Bitching about the last tour has gotten so old, lets complain about the old tours now. :D

Can we talk about how Maiden only played Murders in the Rue Morgue and Phantom of the Opera at select venues on the Powerslave tour? Those lazy bastards! :@

That sucks, but if they could I'm sure Maiden would have wanted to give the full show there too...But they couldn't so...Blame your own regulations and rules and what not.

The show I saw from this tour had the best audio bootleg (one of the best of all bootlegs). Here for my fellow Maidenfans from North America who didn't catch some songs, some nice audio for ya:

Yes, Waldrock is a classic! Listen to Roskilde 03 as well, also radio recorded ( as I posted Clansman above) :)

There's some actual live footage shot from Roskilde 03 too !

Give Me Ed was a fantastic show at Roskilde....but not better than the 2000 one!, Bruce and Adrian back and live at Roskilde....the atmosphere was ecstatic :) Also many videos available from that show!

Let's address this one too ... when Maiden puts together a set list, it's more than just 6 musicians playing the songs. Lighting, sound and every other part of the crew have to know what's going on too. Recalling that Maiden generally doesn't mix up the set on a given tour, I suspect they put together the longest set they could play at all venues, and then played that set at every venue - rather than trying to calculate a new set for every tour stop.

It's nice that Chicago's laws let shows run 20 minutes later. That doesn't mean Maiden is obligated to play every second of it.

Those 20 minutes could account for a lot of things, too. Maybe they built in 1/2 hour as buffer time, in case something went wrong and they needed to extend a break. Or if someone had to send a guy up to Nicko to tell him to extend his drum solo whilst Steve fixed his bass. That probably would go over just fine. Maybe Bruce ranted less or more than expected. I'd be pissed if the show ended 1 hour early. 20 minutes? That's just good planning.

the one tour I did NOT go in since Brave New World. They never came to an area I could reach or wanted to reach

would have loved to hear 22 Acacia Avenue or Bring your daughter to the slaughter

I saw this tour at Madison Square Garden, and it was phenomenal. The band was on fire, they played deep cuts like Die With Your Boots On, Revelations (hadn't been played much at that time, I don't think), and The Clairvoyant. To this day, I have never seen Bruce more animated than he was on this tour.

As far as time constraints go, there's a very important aspect to remember:

DIO was direct support. MOTORHEAD was the opener. Could Iron Maiden have played a couple more songs? Maybe, if they hadn't stacked the freaking deck with incredibly popular tour partners (both of whom delivered a killer set, by the way, even though I don't really dig Motorhead).

Would have been awesome to see Ronnie and Maiden at the same show. It was cool having Alice Cooper open for Maiden in 2012

My first IM concert was in Paris in June 2003. We got the same setlist as below:
1.The Number of the Beast 2.The Trooper 3.Die With Your Boots On 4.Revelations 5.Hallowed Be Thy Name 6.22 Acacia Avenue 7.Wildest Dreams 8.The Wicker Man 9.Brave New World 10.The Clansman 11.The Clairvoyant 12.Heaven Can Wait 13.Fear of the Dark 14.Iron Maiden 15.Bring Me Your Daughter... ...to the Slaughter 16.2 Minutes to Midnight 17.Run to the Hills
