Maiden new album in 2014

Finding it hard to know in what thread to put what comments, but since we're talking SiT here...

I just always come back to the sound/tone of the album itself. It had synths, not keyboards; it was mixed with more reverb; etc. It has this really big, full, together tone about it; which just isn't Maiden's live sound. I didn't see SiaSL in '99, but from bootlegs (clearly I'm listening to the wrong ones here) I don't think it sounds that good; H certainly didn't nail (in my opinion) that lovely mid-song solo, in terms of the tone of the original recording. It just feels & sounds too fragile for a Maiden live set. Wasted Years is played, & works, because it's the easiest song for them to play live and sound like the album version; there was no synths (bass or guitars) in this track. I don't, personally, think this is a big enough reason not to play some of the material live though. I mean, they just played SSoaSS live; so it's not that difficult to imagine them (at one point) having done, say, AtG. Sea Of Madness from bootlegs (back in '86/'87) sounds pretty good too; they could certainly play a track like that live again, & do it justice I'd have thought.

Other than this, I just wish they'd apply their fuck-you attitude, that they apply to new material (i.e. we're going to play this new stuff live, & you're going to listen --Maiden always give a good smattering from their new albums on the album tour), to just one (just one is fine) older less-played track every tour. But, it's a bit late now; the format seems pretty well oiled as-is, so I don't see any likelihood of them changing their live set-up.

You're contradicting yourself a bit here. Alexander the Great has even more fragile moments than SiaSL (and about as much or even more guitar synth). For instance, especially that solo with the unusual time signature. The song has lots of changes, all in all, it's probably a more difficult song than SSOASS. Sea of Madness has quite difficult drumming, and also a sensitive mid piece which is dynamic at the same time. And I am not sure if Bruce could still sing that.

Hell yes.

In theory, though, the third guitar would allow the band to still use those synth parts. They would simply be transposed to Janick's guitar playing style and add a new dimension to those songs.

A hypothetical:

I think a "fuck all" attitude is great, but I have a feeling they are playing what they want to play. We may want them to play those deep cuts, but who's to say the band as any interest in that? They have live songs that are tried and true, so why keep changing it up? Also, there's a chance that, as songwriters, they just don't think the obscure songs are their best material.

I'm not contradicting myself, I just thought there was a comparison to be made between SSoaSS & AtG --two big "epics"; one they've just played live, one they've never played live. I don't think AtG is (as we've discussed before) is as complicated as you make out. I just think Maiden don't think it would hold up well live, as is (perhaps) proved by the fact that they rehearsed it, but decided not actually play it. Admittedly SSoaSS is just loads of Em chords! :p (--so maybe you're right.)

With SiaSL --maybe fragile isn't the word. But just listen to that initial lead guitar part from Adrian; this is heavily processed (guitar+synth). His guitar tone set-up for that recording is not something I've heard him (or Maiden) produce live (three guitars wouldn't help) --since he doesn't normally play with a synth live. (He used it on Thousand Suns & he uses it [for bits?] on Moonchild.)

And MrKnickerbocker, it was a "fuck-you" attitude, not a "fuck all" attitude! :D

@Lego

It's all about familiarity really I think, ain't no one at a Maiden show who doesn't know Run To The Hills, everyone knows The Trooper...I hate to use the word "casual" Maiden fans..but I'm sure that for some people tracks like Die With Your Boots On, Killers etc would be deep album cuts for them..."Oh yeah it's that song from that album, that I sorta like but hey it isn't as good as The Trooper!"

well, I would like to add that statistically, SIT is their best selling album in the USA, Canada, Germany, Sweden and Norway among others just as a point to be made. )Don't ask where those came from because it has been 4 years since I last saw the magazine that had them in it. I am POSITIVE every fan there and here in the states would know those songs.....

Perun: Bruce hated the Fear of the Dark album and No Prayer for the Dying as did Adrian. It baffles me that they started pulling songs out of them. It irked me when they chose to play ATSS instead of ID on the last tour.

Sorry, the reference to "them" [my emphasis in the quote above] immediately following the mention of the albums FotD & NPftD, didn't strike me as a reference to SiT...

the reference was not meant to come across as plural. ATSS is all that they did that I'm aware of. As far as the Maiden England set goes, it wasn't much different from their Somewhere Back in Time set (which might of well been a Seventh Son set considering they played "4" songs from it and then played the same 4 plus SSOASS this go around. What the heck????? My reference was aimed also at SIT but for the purpose to serve my discontent with the band and their setlists over the past 3 tours. Seventh Son songs don't work live any better than SIT songs so what is the big deal? SIT was a MUCH heavier album. The songs had more power, more melody and more epic riffs than SSOASS. SIT I felt was the closest thing Maiden got to being a Thrash Metal album and it came out in 86 when Thrash was dominating the metal world. I think that's why Americans loved it and hated SSOASS for being too "light", "lacking power" ect.

It's been announced on some radio shows that Maiden is planning to play France again in 2014. Three different possibilities : one in Paris (Parc des Princes : a terrible location), and two in western France (one 80 km from where I live !). The guy that made the announcement is a reliable source, and I take that for granted.

If it is true and the show is in in western, I hopefully would be able to get you some tickets. I'd LOVE to see them in my area.
