Blaze Bayley on Iron Maiden, depression and what keeps him going

Blaze says he wishes ''Justice Of The Peace'' had been on the album. ''Those three songs, it would've been great to have more time to mix them and put them on the record.''

On whether he thinks Maiden will ever release a concert video from his era - ''No, there's very little footage of that era. I've moved something like six times since then, so most of what I'd kept has just disappeared or got lost. If you look at Visions Of The Beast, I've got six songs on there. That's probably as close as we're going to get. Actually, what we do have is Chile. I'm famous for losing my temper there.''

''If there was a project where they'd want the two voices, I'd be absolutely fine. Why would I be against that?! It'd be fun! My dream was to do a gig where Paul, Bruce and me could share a stage. For fans, it'd be absolute madness. At the same time, if I wrote something where I thought, 'This could do with Bruce', I'd ask him, same as anybody else.''

''As an artist, there are things I want to do. With Circle Of Stone, I felt I really managed to express a lot of the passion and darkness, using my voice in a way that I hadn't before.''

There is more shows in youtube than blaze has. Bulgaria 1995 excelent proshot, curitiba 98 another tv broadcast and a few bootlegs

Well, I think he stated that he also believes he is not a natural singer or something like that. I met him back in the day, Sep 1998 if I remember correctly. Such a genuine guy!

Seeing this, you can see why Steve wanted him, because here he's commanding the audience in a different way from Bruce, but equally effective, IMO. Magnetic presence onstage, and yet when he began performing with Maiden, that presence...poof. Nowhere to be found. Only Blaze can answer for sure, but it lends credence to my theory he never figured out what his identity was within the fold.

On one hand, I get it. Maiden's music doesn't call for this sort of crazy, flailing presence, especially when you're touring Maiden's darkest and perhaps most energetically restrained album to date. That, I think, would confuse anyone as to what you were supposed to do up there. That, and the vocals themselves were probably much more challenging than his Wolfsbane stuff, not to mention remembering the lyrics (which we know he had trouble with here and there on The X Factour. It all points to the likelihood that a lot of his focus was just getting through the shows and screwing up as little as possible.

No offence, but he sounds awful, and his stage presence reminds me of some high school boy or something.

Had to be difficult to replace Bruce and tour with maiden

Agreed, also Steve should have allowed Blaze to unleash his energy onstage with Maiden in 1994 when he was fresh. I still find it astonishing that Blaze got the job in December 1993 and then didn’t play a show with Maiden for nearly two years.

Talk about a strange start. The bike accident doesn’t even explain all of it. Blaze could have had a small showcase performance that was heavier on the Paul era classics soon after getting the gig, it would have helped his confidence and probably helped Maiden in the studio.

Also, his bike accident wasn’t event the reason the mythical Blaze warm up dates with maiden were cancelled in early 94:

His stage presence fit the band he was fronting, IMO. You can say his onstage antics were amateurish, but from the video, he has the crowd in the palm of his hand. I can't say he ever accomplished this with Maiden.

As for his vocals, again, he's very unrefined like the band he's fronting. I don't mind this unhinged style while fronting Wolfsbane. Wouldn't have worked with Maiden. While I do love his era of Maiden, I've long said he was too green vocally for the job. Steve thought otherwise, or thought he could build him into the singer he wanted. Blaze himself has said numerous times he learned a lot about his voice through working with Steve.
