As you scream into the web of silence...
3 The Number of the Beast +3
2 Virtual XI +2
1 "Virus" [alt. 2] +1
0 Live at the Rainbow
0 "The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg"
0 Nights of the Dead, Legacy of the Beast: Live in Mexico City
What a great round. Major step up from the last one.
The Number of the Beast is by far the most iconic Maiden album cover, deservedly so. Would probably be somewhere in my top 5.
Virtual XI gets shit on sometimes but I kinda think it's a banger. Kid wanders away from his footballer friends and puts on a headset to be transported away to a snarly, vicious looking Eddie who's performing scorched-earth genocide in Europe or some shit.
The CD 2 version of "Virus" has always been a cover that's stuck with me. I don't think it's good, or at least it shouldn't be good, but I really like it's crazy, distorted, cobbled-together look with Eddie as some kind of disease in a lab dish. Personally I find it pretty memorable but I won't be surprised if everyone else ignores it, especially since the competition is pretty good.
Live at the Rainbow is lots of fun, if a little simplistic (and what the hell is going on with Eddie's legs?); "The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg" is wild, pirate-esque Eddie ripping open his grave.
Which leaves Nights of the yadda yadda yadda. On its own, a decent cover, but I will never forget the feeling of hoping for a LOTB live album and on top of that hoping for them to use the Leg 2 tour poster which I thought was incredible. And then they actually released a LOTB live album, with the Leg 2 tour poster. But instead of it just being the poster, they went and edited it to fit the Mexico City theme, which made Eddie and the background uglier, and added a black vignette, cutting off most of the picture. That was already bad enough. Then the actual album itself was dogshit too. Fuck me, man. Goddamnit.

). "...Breeg" is well made, but not really original (we had already had at least Live After Death and No Prayer For The Dying for "cemetaries at night" scenes).
