Out of curiosity, what happened between 1986 and 2003?
Way back then, prior to the internet, we got news from monthly publications and the radio. There were rumors that Maiden were going in a different musical direction on their new album following "Somewhere In Time," adding synths and maybe a more radio-friendly vibe. A popular radio show at the time, Metal Shop, devoted an entire episode to the new "SSOASS" along with band interviews and the premiere of the first single, "Can I Play With Madness?". Upon hearing it, I was out. I could NOT believe that this was Maiden's new direction. I remember also hearing "Moonchild" and "TETMD" during the show and I thought "Oh no, Maiden has sold out and gone for radio play." At that time, that was the direction most metal bands were forced to travel; in order to sell records, they had to tone down their rougher edges, get hit singles, have videos on MTV and appear on television shows like "Solid Gold." Ozzy did it with "So Tired," Dokken appeared on "American Bandstand."
So I never gave "SSOASS" a proper chance until years later. I was sad to hear that Adrian left shortly thereafter, I hated "NPFTD" upon first listen, then Bruce left and I thought Blaze was an awful choice to replace him. It was a weird period for Maiden; the stage show was stripped down, the venues and crowds were smaller, and Bruce was kicking their asses creatively on his solo albums and tours.
I was studying guitar more seriously at the time and began to expand my listening beyond my early metal influences. Lots of funk, R&B, Prince, classical, Santana, blues...and when I poked my head back in to hear what my favorite rock bands were doing, nothing caught my attention. They were breaking up, dying for a hit, and trying to survive alternative and industrial bands.
I heard Bruce and Adrian returned and checked out the "Rock In Rio" DVD and was knocked out. Just floored. Went to the current "GMETID" tour at Long Beach Arena with Dio and Motorhead, had a ball, and I've been back with Maiden ever since.
