Great! Headless Cross and The Last In Line were close to making it in my list as well. Not familiar with many bands here though.

I hated trying to rank these, but I think this list is fairly representative of my favorite metal songs:

#1. Rime of the Ancient Mariner
Iron Maiden | Powerslave (1984)
The ultimate metal epic, a joyous journey through poetry and still the song that the rest of the genre has to live up to.

#2. Ghost Love Score
Nightwish | Once (2004)
Metal meets film score, moving from quiet to bombastic with orchestral flourishes as one of the most powerful choruses uproots your soul.

#3. Old Thunder
Ahab | The Call of the Wretched Sea (2006)
Funeral doom's finest song, a monstrously heavy whaling epic that peaks in glorious fashion while crushing riffs act as tidal waves against your speakers.

#4. Trumpets of Jericho
Bruce Dickinson | The Chemical Wedding (1998)
A rocking archaic beast composed of heavy guitar and the greatest metal singer ever giving one of his most captivating performances, heavy in the verses and soaring in the chorus.

#5. The Odyssey
Symphony X | The Odyssey (2002)
The ultimate prog metal masterpiece, 24 minutes of shifting rhythms, neoclassical guitar, orchestral keys, and beautiful vocals that will tear at your soul - and the most incredible journey through ancient Greek literature you'll ever hear.

#6. Forty Six & 2
Tool | Ænima (1996)
Driven by one of the all-time greatest bass riffs, and guided by hard-hitting lyrics, this is the song I go back to during my self-explorations.

#7. Blackwater Park
Opeth | Blackwater Park (2001)
A titanic extreme metal monster that knows when to quiet down in soothing, ethereal acoustic guitar - and knows when to explode like a motherfucking hurricane.

#8. Judith
A Perfect Circle | Mer de Noms (2000)
A gut-wrenchingly angry attack on the hypocrisy of religion, built with a mixture of heavy alternative riffing and beautiful vocal harmonies, leading up to one of the most insane held notes in metal history.

#9. Raining Blood
Slayer | Reign in Blood (1986)
The greatest thrash song of them all, featuring three-and-a-half minutes of raging guitar built up by ambience and erupting through one of the all-time greatest riffs - and then finishing out with a flurry of nuthouse soloing and a minute of rain sounds for good measure.

#10. Burning Times
Iced Earth | Something Wicked This Way Comes (1998)
One of the best concert openers, with a killer riff and powerful vocals that explode with the force of a cyclone.

#11. King James
Buckethead | Crime Slunk Scene (2006)
A wondrous instrumental showcase of great guitarwork with peaks and valleys driven forward in joyous fashion.

#12. Rain When I Die
Alice in Chains | Dirt (1992)
The perfect blend of Sabbathy-AIC doom and erupting Layne Staley awe - featuring one of most powerful choruses you'll ever hear.

#13. Ghost Division
Sabaton | The Art of War (2008)
Sabaton is a silly band, but here they unleash the most rip-roaring tank anthem of all time, with a blaze of heavy guitars and action-packed lyrics.

#14. Crystal Mountain
Death | Symbolic (1995)
One of the greatest extreme metal songs of all time, with furious guitar and screeching vocals undercut with acoustic interspersions that add a real depth to this dissection of religion.

#15. Ich will
Rammstein | Mutter (2001)
So hard to pick which Rammstein song to include, but I'm going with this one - an anthemic track with lyrics you could shout to at a concert... or ascribe to any two-faced leader with a lust for power.

#16. Corporal Jigsore Quandary
Carcass | Necroticism - Descanting the Insalubrious (1991)
A grimy, pathological dissection with some of death metal's all-time greatest riffs.

#17. Disposable Heroes
Metallica | Master of Puppets (1984)
"The Trooper" on steroids - heavier, longer, more intense, and featuring some of the best riffing, soloing, and choruses you'll ever hear from the biggest metal band on the planet.

#18. Blood and Thunder
Mastodon | Leviathan (2004)
An absolute juggernaut of a whaling anthem and one of the most intense opening rockers in metal history.

#19. The Sentinel
Judas Priest | Defenders of the Faith (1984)
Hard to pick a Priest song but this one is absolutely scorching from beginning to end, everything you want from a heavy metal track in just five minutes.

#20. Eyes of a Stranger
Queensrÿche | Operation: Mindcrime (1988)
A powerful conclusion to one of metal's greatest concept albums, with emotional lyrics, soaring vocals, and twin guitar awesomeness.

I nominated it for the GMSC, you´d better vote for it! :D
2. FATES WARNING - At fate's hands
4. MEGADETH - Blood of heroes
9. QUEENSRYCHE: Suite Sister Mary
11. CRIMSON GLORY: Azrael
15. PARADISE LOST: Hallowed land
Excellent choices!

I’m sure I will, unless LC has a thunderstorm lined up against it.
It's the headliner of the Nicko McBrain Division, along with AC/DC - Whole Lotta Rosie, Machine Head - Davidian, Faith No More - The Real Thing, and Life of Agony - This Time. I have a hard time seeing it not come out of that division as top seed.

Difficult task but I'll try it:

I wanted to separate Hard Rock and Metal bands. I have to say that there's a lot of great songs and bands that cannot be included.
