Who's song credit will you look forward to hearing most on a possible next album?

The problem is there’s a lot riding on it:
- opening track
- title track
- cover imagery rests on it
- and it lasts an astonishing 10% of the albums total run time!

At that stage you really have to make the song really awesome and it’s just …. OK. Like average OK. It drones on for too long obviously but even then it isn’t spectacular.

If it was buried in the back of the album like Age of Innocence on DoD I wouldn’t care, but to me Senjutsu drops the quality of the album due to its prominence and averageness.

Yes it’s Smith / Harris.
God it's boring

More Harris epics, of course.

Preferably, sequels. Something like:

The Parchment 2: Witching Hour

Hell On Earth 2: Doom

To Tame A Land 2: The Bene Gesserit

When The Wild Wind Blows 2: Nuclear Winter

Sign Of The Cross 2: Torquemada

The Duellists 2: Vengeance

Phantom Of The Opera 2: The Unmasking

The Clansman 2: The Return

I would be happy with ten Gers/Harris' but as long as there's two I take it. Its gonna be a decent album no matter who get the credits, which you can always expect from Maiden. Even their worst album is better than 60% of recorded albums in history.

If Murray manages to redeem himself I cross my fingers for his 4th good song after reunion. But don't bother with mediocrity. Smith / Dickinson is overrated but I guess we could do with one, or put 'Arry in the mix and try to repeat AMOLAD writing sessions. Maybe one Smith / Harris. Naturally there is no Maiden album without 2-3 Harris epics / solos.

As its their finaal album I hope one extraordinary surprise like Murray / Dickinson, Gers / Dickinson, Harris / Dickinson. Or Smith alone for the first time since SIT.

Smallwood/Taylor/Shack - The Loneliness of the Long Distance Manager

A song about beer and other 360 degrees merchandising efforts, bookended with quiet bass driven intros and outros.

Joking aside, in the past I would have voted for Smith/Dickinson, but following the cringeworthy lyrics Bruce penned for Darkest Hour, I think I’d rather have a Murray/Dawson credit instead!

Gers /Harris and Harris alone. Smith/Harris is mostly average, and I don't expect much from that (Please surprise me with another Paschendale!) Gers/Dickinson should come back. Another TWOTW is always welcome from Smith/Dickinson, as well as a short rocker like Rainmaker from Murray.

Harris / Gers has just gotten better and better over time. Obviously they were finding their feet on Apparition and Weekend Warrior!

Then we had Lord of the Flies and The Unbeliever, which are two of my favourite X Factor songs. Plus Aftermath which I’m not so keen on. Maybe more Harris than Gers so to speak.

Nothing in VX11, then pure gold peppered across the reunion era from Gers / Harris.

As Gers / Dickinson has just fallen away as a writing combo, surprisingly.

By parallel I think Smith / Dickinson and Smith / Harris has gotten weaker over time. We should hope for the innovative combos you mentioned.

just hope we don't get any Smith/Harris songs. They are obviously both amazing songwriters, but they also somehow manage to bring out each other's worst qualities. Their songs are usually some of my least favourites.
The Evil That Men Do? :D Okay, that song has Bruce too.

I'd be fairly sure most of the collaborations between song writers now is the guitarist has pre written music and then either goes to Steve or Bruce for lyrics, in Steve's case he might then throw a riff or melody in or alter the arrangement.

So a lot of talk about particular pairings is moot. It's just pot luck who collaborates with who with pre written music and most likely pre written lyrics

Yeah, my comments here are obviously generalized to a degree. And the further back we go, the less prevalent some of the clichés and songwriting tropes that we are used to nowadays were back then. It's modern Harris and Smith that I don't want to see collaborate too much. I'd rather Harris stick with Gers, since they've written some of my favourite songs together, over the last almost 30 years. And Smith with Dickinson, since those two tend to work really well together as well.
