Which Iron Maiden albums Iron Maiden likes?

I always wandered, but couldn't find answers: what maiden albums maiden members choose to be their favorite.
Info I know:
1) Steve doesn't like how IM turned out because of production.
2) POM is favorite album of Steve by some sources (idk which) and was favorite of Bruce, but that changed with release of BNW (but new interviews hint he likes Killers)
3) AMOLAD is favorite of Nicko, as he stated that in 2006
I know approximately which albums they're proud of and which they are not, but don't know exactly.

I'm really curious if you know some of this info.

The running joke is that Nicko’s favorite is always the most recent one, because that’s what he always declares to the press. So, Senjutsu.

Adrian has often said Somewhere In Time was the most creatively satisfying for him because he got so many of his ideas for songs and sounds onto it, and the highly-regarded singles were both songs he penned solo.

Bruce can be all over the place on questions like these, but I’ve most often heard one of his first three albums with the band (TNOTB, POM, Powerslave). I think I’ve tended to hear him go with Piece Of Mind more often than the other two, though.

No idea on Steve, other than The X Factor being a sentimental favorite of his, which is different from saying it’s his favorite overall.

Also no idea on Dave and Janick, though I would guess they’d both pick 90s albums where they made a lot more songwriting contributions than during other eras.

There was a video of an interview where the bands select their favorites album. I think adrian and bruce chose brave new world and maybe powerslave i cant remember and steve i think number of thr beast and x factor. The interview has to be on youtube was for a tv show in a european tour. Maybe someone remembers it i dont find it

The X Factor has been mentioned by Steve as one of his favourites, both in the Run to the Hills biography and in Blaze's own book, when he was interviewed.

And there is an old forum thread quoting Janick's opinion on The X Factor (in which he seemed to share Steve's view):

On a sidepoint, I have never seen any comment on No Prayer by Janick, and he doesn't even has a credit on a single track on that album (while Adrian has a co-credit on Hooks in You). Janick propably made some contributions to Bring Your Daughter though, but didn't receive a credit.

Here we can see them picking a few. Bruce goes straight to Powerslave and Adrian to SIT. Both praise BNW. Steve picks TXF, DOD and RIR and says 7th Son would be among his top 5 as well. Davey also speaks highly of 7th Son.

All of them are quite fond of AMOLAD as well. I especially remember Bruce praising it in an interview before the release of Senjutsu, if I’m not mistaken.

Imo Bruce’s recent Killers comments are pure hype about the current tour. I’m sure he likes the album but I don’t feel like I ever saw him hyping it up before we had a tour that featured the album as heavily as this one both in setlist and staging/Eddie. The albums he seems to consistently praise in retrospect are Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, Brave New World, and A Matter of Life and Death. He also seemed more excited about Senjutsu in the press than he had been for TBOS or TFF at the time of those albums' respective releases.

Steve Harris clearly had a soft spot for X Factor, I don't really feel like I've seen him be vocally excited for any album since then outside of the initial promotional period.

It seems to me like SSOASS is the consensus album for everybody, hence the album having a pretty heavy presence in the setlists over the years. Bruce and Steve clearly are fond of it and the notoriously picky Adrian also contributed a lot to it creatively.

I wonder how much connection Janick really has to that album. The writing sessions were wrapped up by the time Gers joined and there was probably a feeling of being a hired gun when recording (this comes out in his playing on the album as well IMO). I always felt like X Factor was the first album where he left a major mark, along with Blaze and Steve I feel like this is also his album in a lot of ways though it isn't often framed that way.

The chord progression for Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter and open chord based riff is close enough to other Dickinson penned songs that I assume this was a song he was able to write by himself with his limited guitar skills.

Great idea for a thread! Obviously there are a few albums that seem to be standouts for several members - SSOASS, X Factor, Brave New World - but I wonder if every album has a vocal supporter within the band. Is The Final Frontier an album that the band has forgotten about since, or is this secretly Dave's favorite album?

Musicians never answer this question the way we want to. We want to know what they prefer musically, as in final result, but they focus on the experience they had while creating the music. It's super rare to see musicians comment on the actual music.

Thank you is that interview

Bruce recently said that ''Bring Your Daughter'' is co-written by Janick. I don't agree about his playing on NPFTD, that's his style. But he improved for the next albums (he co-wrote more than half of X Factor). Bruce has praised Killers before the current tour.

To summarize:

Steve - SSOASS, POM (said it in 1989), TXF, DOD (probably because it was the most recent one).

Bruce - Powerslave, POM, BNW, SSOASS, Killers, AMOLAD, Senjutsu (he called it special), TNOTB.

Adrian - SIT, BNW, TNOTB, SJ (he said it's one of their best albums in years), TBOS.

Dave - SSOASS, BNW.

Janick - TXF, TBOS (he and Adrian called it a fantastic album in one interview).

Nicko - AMOLAD, TBOS (remember from an interview)... every album . He called VXI one of their best in 1998.

Everyone seems to agree on the likes of: SSOASS, TNOTB, POM, BNW. Probably AMOLAD. Btw, Steve should like TBOS and SJ, right?

  • we listed all albums without: the debut, NPFTD, FOTD, VXI and TFF.
Why Nicko and Janick weren't included...
