Dick Brucinson

The TRUE Dick Brucinson
I have to admit Senjutsu had been a grower for me and I can finally enjoy it in big parts nowadays, but still I like TBOS better. Seems somehow a more coherent album to me and it has more outstanding moments than Senjutsu does have.
The only weak moment of the album for me is the Polka intro to Death Or Glory.

Senjutsu for me. I like it way less than when it came out but still more than TBOS which has a better sound and coherence but too many mediocre songs for my taste.

BNW
AMOLAD
DOD
SJ
TFF
TBOS

Can't wait for the next one, it's time!

Senjutsu by far!
I´d even go further: the closing trio on Senjutsu of Celts/Parchment/Hell is the best trio of songs on any reunion album!

I love both (two weaker songs overall, 6-7 big classics), but SJ has some stronger and slightly more interesting/special ideas, at least for me (plus Hell On Earth is one of my favorite songs ever). But I enjoy the balance of the shorter songs in TBOS. Both albums have some parts I wanted to be different (more in TBOS).

Senjutsu, definitely. Some of the best tracks on TBOS are absolutely amazing, though Hell On Earth managed to beat them. The weaker tracks (Death of the Celts, Darkest Hour) are leagues ahead of the utter piece of crap that Speed of Light is (I despise that song). Overall the tracks on Senjutsu are simply much stronger on average than the stuff on TBOS, imo.

For me the second part of bos after the title track is a bit boring. Yes empire of the clouds for me its a 5.5/10 senjutsu for me has a few boring songs. 1 or 2

Senjutsu

The Book of Souls has one of their worst songs ever in When the River Runs Deep and it's far too long.

It's a bit of a tossup for me. Both albums have a couple of poor songs, ok/good and a few great stand out tracks. I am leaning towards TBoS.

The Book of Souls by far. Senjutsu is their weakest post-reunion album.
Agreed. Directly followed by Brave New World, which is also significantly overrated.
'Weakest reunion albums' doesn't of course & necessarily mean 'bad', they're still good albums, but beyond Maidens potential.
At least I can now somehow enjoy Senjutsu the one or other way, which wasn't possible the first few years after its release. Probably it was the 2023 tour that got me the album in a better light at last.

Senjutsu. I don't necessarily rate it all that much honestly, but I feel TBOS simply has too many moments that are utterly lackluster and songs that are at best okay.

Most of the songs on Senjutsu are massively bloated and there's two I kinda despise (LIALW especially, Darkest Hour mostly because of the godawful lyrics and bad melodies) but the musical ideas tend to be more interesting to my ears and there's a few decent tunes.

The lead single on Senjutsu is far superior, but IESF obviously edges Senjutsu out as an opening track due to the song's sluggish pace and excessive length. Meanwhile, EotC is interesting musically but feels out of place. HoE is the far superior closing epic. TBOS is a much better title track and similarly also is far stronger than TTM as the mandatory Janick co-write epic, but it's just not enough when you also have WTRRD and SotV dragging the album down. I don't necessarily hate those songs, but they're about the same as the DoD filler tracks in my book.

And don't get me started on TMOS. That track is not only straight-up bad, it also sounds like a fucking demo.

e: Oh yeah, one mark against Senjutsu is that unlike its predecessor, there's massive amounts of recycling and self-plagiarism on the album. Like, distracting amounts at times. Despite this somehow I find the album to sound fresher than TBOS.

Book of souls has a lot recycling riffs.

SJ and the only reason is Hell on Earth. Otherwise I'm not the biggest fan of these latter albums (AMOLAD being the last great one)

Book of Souls, mainly on the strength of the title track which is a top 5 song for me.

In contrast, I really don’t like the title track on Senjutsu, and as it’s the album opener that becomes a bit of a problem when rating an album.

The rest of the tracks across the two albums are fairly even with varying amount of quality.
