What music besides metal, do we listen?

You all saw it appearing in lots of threads I guess. Someone would say "yeah, well metal is great but I also listen to Pavarotti, Wagner, Debussy and Snoop dogg".

OK, maybe not quite but I'm interested in knowing what else, except metal you people listen to.

So post what genres, artists, and artists from particular genres you listen to and maybe write something about what do you like about them and their music.

As for me, besides metal I used to listen to rap and I still do, but less frequently. Rap: 2Pac, Eminem, and a couple of Belgrade's rap bends.
I also like to hear Pavarotti occasionally, some classical music- Mozart, Beethoven, Verdi, Wagner...
Guns'n'roses(I always had this idea of how it would've sound if Axl Rose would sang some Maiden songs, and in turn, Dickinson some GNR songs, because they have such different voices.)

And as probably the great majority of this forum, I'm a big fan of Dickinson's solo work.

I have little diversity in my musical collection.  Apart from heavy metal, I mostly listen to mainstream progressive rock like Ruch and Pink Floyd and other popular rock bands like GNR, Motorhead and Nirvana.  I used to like rap and pop music but the I never listen to the radio nowadays, which is a shame in a way as I have become quite close minded.

Outside of metal, I am a big Pink Floyd fan and I also listen to a fair bit of Level 42 and Prodigy as well as Stiff Little Fingers (and the odd other punk band).

This also depends on how we define metal - as I could say I listen to a lot of 70's bands such as Thin Lizzy, UFO, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, etc. that often get tagged as metal (especially UFO and Purple). I also listen to a lot of (surprise, surprise) hard rock that again gets a metal tag (i.e. AC/DC).

If you need further info, click below (on me 'ead, son). :D

Ah yes, don't we all love bragging about how Open-Minded(TM) we are? :nana: Outside of metal,  I mostly enjoy electronic music such as VNV Nation, Kraftwerk and Wolfsheim, ambient (Tangerine Dream, Endura, Brian Eno) and um, whatever the name of the genre that Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance file under.

Classical - especially symphonic music, string quartets and solo piano.
Pop - especially from the 1980s, when I grew up. Purple rain, purple rain...
Soul and funk - Stevie Wonder, Funkadelic, etc.
Progressive rock - ye olde Englishe stuffe. Yes, Genesis, etc. Plus Rush and DT.
Classic British rock - Beatles, Stones, Who, Kinks, etc.

Unfortunately I dont listen to much outside metal, but i also like progressive rock - king crimson, yes etc. Dire straits (not sure what genre), Kansas, The Who, and of course the Beatles(love their albums from rubber soul onwards)

I enjoy a lot of progressive rock (Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Rush, Genesis etc), some straightforward hard rock (Thin Lizzy), a bit of electronic music (Tangerine Dream, Aphex Twin) and stuff like Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart that doesn't really go anywhere in the vast filing system of musical genres.

The genres above are the ones I listen to excessively - I occasionally listen to stuff from most other styles too...

-Progressive Rock (Pink Floyd and Rush etc.)
-(some) Classic/Hard Rock (KISS, Alice Cooper)
-Classical (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Modern)
-Movie/Game Soundtrack (Nobuo Uematsu, Hans Zimmer, John Williams, James Horner, Klaus Badelt etc.)
-Some grunge/alt rock (Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam etc.)
-Some psychadelic music (Ozric Tentacles )

Progressive Rock (Pink Floyd)
Hard Rock (Aerosmith, Van Halen, AC/DC, Deep Purple... and many more)
Alt. Rock (Alice in Chains, Moist, I Mother Earth)
Mainstream Rock (Rolling Stones)
Comedy/Parody ("Weird" Al Yankovic)
I like some pop acts like Nelly Furtado but do not own any music by her.
When I first started listening to English music I listened to some rap/dance like C & C Music Factory.

It would take too long to say why I like these bands.  Aerosmith, for example, while not coming close to the heaviness of metal or even other hard rocks bands, manages to build such adrenaline and intensity.

I OWN almost exclusively Metal, but I LISTEN and ENJOY everything EXCEPT rap, techno and dance (I only TOLERATE those and for VERY short periods of time. I also JUST noticed how fun it is to EMPHASIZE a few words here and there :D

I'm surprised that nobody talks about blues in a metal forum. Blues is a heavy influence in hard rock/metal.

Blues - Jeff Healey is a brilliant guitarist - the blind guy in Roadhouse for those of you that prefer movies to music. ::) Also 10 years after has made some great songs. George Thorogood is fun sometimes. A Swedish rock poet called Rolf Wikström - he makes his guitar weep and scream like no-one else. And brilliant lyrics if you can understand them. A Swedish rock/blues band called Wilmer X.

Hard rock - AC/DC is a given party mover; D.A.D, country 'n' metal :D; Deep Purple, Lizzy, Rainbow

Rock - Manic Street Preachers, in my opinion one of the best acts ever to come out of Britain, although somewhat depressive at times; Melissa Etheridge, a brilliant singer/songwriter; Pink Floyd, of course; an Australian band called Noiseworks. I think they made 3 albums in the late 80s/early 90s and then disappeared.

Pop - Beautiful South (love their lyrics); probably lots more that I can't think of right now.

Metal - not very much, really...Maiden of course; Dickinson solo (discovered his work a few months ago and got hooked); Metallica; Judas Priest.

Classical - Mozart, Vivaldi, Albinoni

Jazz - old 40s big band jazz, like Glenn Miller Orchestra and Count Basie; Dixieland

What you'll never find in my mp3-player or in my CD collection: Rap "music"; Country music; dance music (Rave type). Apart from these three you'll find almost everything else, although I might not listen to a lot of it anymore.

I listen a lot of blues, being my favourite blues singer Milton Campbell Jr.

I also like a lot the new wave of Jazz, like the Screaming Headless Torsos (They have a death metal band name, don't they?), or John Scofield.

I also love the all time classics, like Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Nina Simone....

And a few pop music, Michael Jackson comes to my mind.

I also like A LOT Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Steppenwolf, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, but like someone else said back there, sometimes these guys are considered metal.

I go for classic rock like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Bee Gees, Ventures, Chicago, Lynyrd Skynyrd and similar artists.

I love Jazz too, any will do as long as it has a relaxing feel.

In hard rock, Aerosmith, Guns N' Roses, AC/DC, Deep Purple, etc.

The only Grunge I tried was Nirvana though.

So, let's see what I've got in my iTunes shall we?

Hard Rock/Classic Rock- AC/DC, Guns n' Roses, Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin

Progressive Rock- Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull

Gothic/Dark stuff with high voices- Ancient, Tristania, Within Temptation, Paradise Lost (sort of)

Classical- Big collection of everything imaginable except waltzes and Wagner.

Pop- Billy Joel, Elton John, Sting, Robbie Williams, Bon Jovi (pop pr rock?), Bruce Springsteen, Eurythmics, Coldplay, Enya, Kate Ryan, Maroon 5, Nirvana, Simon and Garfunkel

Metal- Hammerfall, Stratovarius, Manowar, Savatage, Blaze, Blind Guardian, Bruce Dickinson, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Children of Bodom, Dio, Demons and Wizards, Dragonforce, King Diamond, Lordi, Mastodon, Moonspell, Pantera

Soundtracks- Lord of the Rings, Gladiator, Star Wars, The Lion King

And the good news is...still growing!

Other than metal/hardrock.......

Depeche Mode
60´s and early 70´s motown/soul music.
Basicly any music from the 60´s.

I don't listen to poppie teeny weenie bands that strut half-naked just to sell millions of albums.  You know which ones I mean.  I also do not listen to rap and dance -- despite my brief fling with it.  (I was young, and just getting to know English -- you can't blame me, really.  Can you?)  I do not like boy bands or albums/bands that are exclusively/consistently about "love" (read: cheese).  That's my bias and I'm sticking to it.  -_-

Neither do I. I used to watch the female ones with the MUTE on though :D

I listen to a bit of pop punk kind of stuff, bands that were popular a few years ago like Sum 41 and Fenix TX. More recently my girlfriend got me into musicals, something I never thought I'd get into.

i actually have a lot of diversity in the music i listen to. i love 60s folk like bob dylan and joan baez...and i really like classical...(rachmaninoff is my favorite)...then theres old country like hank williams sr. and johnny cash (none of that pop country shit, thank you very much...) i think its important not to limit yourself to one genre of music...i find a lot more satisfaction in having many choices when it comes to what i listen to. which is important, really, because music is my life. but i will always love--absolutely love--metal...its what i identify with most. everything else is secondary...but at least i have the option.
