Valuations?

Hi all,
I've been considering selling some of my old iron maiden records but to be honest I've got absolutely no idea howmuch any if them are worth. I've tried looking on ebay but it's almost impossible to get a decent valuation, it's either sat at 99p with no bids or someone thinks their particular record  is worth a fortune and it sits there with a starting price of a grand or something.
Is there a decent reliable way of finding out what the stuff i've got is worth?

Thanks.

Yeah, a good suggstion, but what market? If I offer a copy of the soudhouse tapes (for example) to a bunch of people who've never heard of it then they might offer me 10p, does that mean that's what its true value is?
Yes, you're right to say that the value is set by the market, but getting the right market is easier said than done.
Take ebay for example.
A great 'true' market.
Except that now many people are scared of being ripped off that they don't bid on stuff in case it turns out to be a scam.
Do you see my point?

I do see your point, but there is no reliable way of finding out the 'true' value of something. It's true that Ebay is not your best bet if you want to make as much money as possible from your items. I'd rather try selling them to a second hand record store, although you'll have to do careful investigation into which store will give you the most for something. Usually, stores specialised in heavy metal articles will give you more than music shops who will sell anything.

Well send me your list and I'll give you an appraisal, that copy of the Soundhouse Tapes, probably worth nothing, but I'll give you a fiver for it. :smartarse:

I imagine that most people who own a copy of the soundhouse tapes think it's real. I don't know of any 100% sure way of telling though.
I personally have 2 (no, seriously) and to my eyes they are both identical in every regard. That proves (to me at least) that they are either a) genuine or b) both made by the same bootlegger.
But ebay is useless for such niche things as that, most people won't know what it is, and the ones that do will regard it as a potential scam/forgery and not bid, thus the market is skewed.
And besides, it's not just the real high value stuff, a relatively small amnount extra for each of your common or garden 7 inch singles say could make almost as much difference as 1 high value item.
And, to answer someone else's point, I'm not really after "as much as I can get", but just what the records are worth.

Mine are genuine then. Exxcellent. Shall I start the bidding at $5000? Any takers?

Sure. Let me know what it's like to have an Ebay auction without anyone bidding!  :D

Try Trooper Sounds. They have a guide to what is and what is not rare as well as giving a guide price for them.

If I recall correctly, a copy of The Soundhouse Tapes sold on Ebay a couple of years ago for somewhere around $1000. (It was actually sold in England, the price was in pounds, I only remember the mental conversion I made.)

As to who on this forum has a genuine copy, besides Freaky...
Though she doesn't post here anymore, I know The Owl has one. I was there when Maverick personally inspected it and declared it to be genuine.
And though he doesn't post here anymore, I think Maverick has one too. (I'm not sure about that, though... he's got so much stuff, I can't remember it all.)

Yes, Freaky, Owly and Maverick have one. I laid my eyes on all three of them. That's all I know ;)
