53 & 56. I didn't really enjoy any of this. :(

Went with Russian Circles because I'm far more likely to relisten to that than Weather Report, and Alan Parsons Project because it was a more cohesive and less experimental, with a bit of atmosphere to it.

53 is decent - has some power and majesty.
54 is compact and interesting, but not really my kind of music. So, 53.

55 really stretched my patience
56 didn't, plus it sounds iconic. 56

54&56

The second matchup is unfortunate for me, I suggested both songs. Sirius is superior to Larks Tongues in Aspic Part 1 and it's dominating anyway. I'm curious to see what Part 2 does when it comes up.

53 is not my usual style, but 54 was just way too twee for me.

55 is both sleep-inducing and annoying, 56 has that intro/outro riff used in sports arenas throughout the US. However, it's still better than 55.

People called me out for saying prog rock is underrated on this forum, but prog rock songs repeatedly get bashed in this tournament. Much like prog rock albums and prog rock bands didn't stand a chance in their respective games.

How is that a negative? The usage comes from this song. Sirius came out in 1982, its first usage in sports was the introduction of the Chicago Bulls in the 90s.

I am not a prog rock fan, other than Rush. It's just too atmospheric for me. I like prog metal, but most prog rock bores me.

I was at one of those Chicago Bulls games! It's not really a negative. Honestly, I just wish the song was longer. Seems like it builds up and then just returns to the intro to end quickly.

'Sirius' is actually an intro to 'Eye in the Sky' on the album its on.

Not liking it is fine, matter of taste obviously. But I was surprised when my point regarding the valuation of prog on this forum got so much backlash. Prog rock obviously isn't ranked highly here.

Remember padawan, underrated and unliked do not mean the same thing! If people don't rank it highly here it doesn't necessarily mean it's underrated, because we have no baseline/accurate rating for them to compare peoples valuations against. If we were to take the forums average tastes as the mean level... then that would mean you overrate them because you are rating them higher than the norm within this forum ;) Plenty of people like prog here, just not as much as you, doesn't mean they underrate it!

Alternative suggestion, people like prog, but not these songs (or they met some simply awesome competition).

I don't see it. There are some fans of Rush and Floyd, but as a genre overall, there's next to none prog fans on this forum.

Me calling "underratedness" has validity as it's me who is stating his opinions and it's purely entitled to myself. Not trying to come off as objective here, not at all. Don't think "ratedness" should exclusively be an objective term.

Besides, I really don't think this is a matter of "unlikedness" either, many people seem to appreciate elements of prog but writes it off as "not something I'd listen to". Again, you can't force anyone to like anything and that's not what I'm saying here, but one has to admit that prog is rated/ranked pretty low here.

So when you originally said it was underrated, and everyone else said it wasn't, it's quite possible they were also thinking in relation to themselves. Or perhaps they underestimated how much you like them when making their response and figured they liked it just as much as you do? Without something to compare it to it's hard! And you are quite difficult to gauge at times, not like Foro, when he likes something you can know it from a mile away!

Just to clear it up, I was comparing the appreciation level of prog to appreciation level of heavy metal during that discussion. Still doing the same thing, as it is a heavy metal band's forum we're on. I'm not foolish enough to expect prog to be rated the same as metal around here, but I'd expect better results.

Let me put it this way:

Forum's Heavy Metal Appreciation Level: 10
My Heavy Metal Appreciation Level: 7
My Prog Rock Appreciation Level: 10
What I Expect the Forum's Prog Rock Appreciation Level to Be: 7
What Actually is Forum's Prog Rock Appreciation Level: 4

One could argue that I'm underrating heavy metal in this sense.

And you are quite difficult to gauge at times

Care to elaborate on this more closely?

One could argue that you're underrating what the forum's Prog. Rock appreciation level actually is...:innocent:

But to be serious, while an interesting area of discussion, this matters why? Are you surprised at how little people seem to be rate Prog. Rock here? I mean, long progressive tracks were always going to struggle here, in this thread. This isn't necessarily a very good indicator of actual opinion in respect to genres generally.
