As you scream into the web of silence...
While thinking about Opeth's new fan-voted setlist (which only gives fans the options of three songs per album), I started thinking about what it would be like if Maiden did the same sort of thing. So I went and used Setlist.fm to figure out which songs Maiden would be most likely to play from an album were they to do a history tour where every album got represented with one song. This means I did not include songs that haven't been played live or haven't become live staples (ie only played on their album tour). I gave every album at least three options to choose from, and I'll break down why I included what I did here.

Iron Maiden
Every song has been played live and most more than once by the band. The title track is a given so I just didn't include it here. The only other two I left off were Strange World and Charlotte The Harlot since they've barely played those two.

Killers
These songs are the most played from the album.

The Number Of The Beast
Of course TNOTB, RTTH, and HBTN are here, and I also included Avenue and Children because of they've been brought back for other tours.

Piece Of Mind
The only songs played live that I left off are To Tame A Land, because it was only played during the World Piece Tour, and Still Life, since it wasn't brought back for the 2012/13/14 Maiden England tour. The other songs here have all been played on more than one tour.

Powerslave
The songs played live from the album minus Losfer Words, which was dropped partway through the World Slavery Tour anyway.

Somewhere In Time
The band notoriously doesn't like playing stuff from the album, due to how the "studio magic" fails to translate live, aside from Wasted Years and Heaven Can Wait. Ruling out a surprise appearance from Alexander The Great, the third song I'm including is Stranger In A Strange Land, because it was a single and seems more likely than any others on the album.

Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son
All the songs played live from the album, minus Infinite Dreams. Since they cast it aside for the newer Maiden England tour, I don't see any return of it imminent.

No Prayer For The Dying
Hard to pick songs from this one. In the end I just went for the three singles.

Fear Of The Dark
Obviously the title track, and Afraid To Shoot Strangers since it replaced Infinite Dreams for the newer Maiden England tour. Third song is Be Quick Or Be Dead, because I think they're more likely to play that one than From Here To Eternity or Wasting Love.

The X Factor
The first three songs since they're the only ones that have popped up outside of The X Factour.

Virtual XI
Obviously The Clansman, and Futureal because of the Ed Hunter tour. I also threw in The Angel And The Gambler just because it was a single and I don't see the other five songs popping up anytime soon.

Brave New World
The first four songs on the album, since they're the most played from it.

Dance Of Death
The title track and Wildest Dreams, again because they're the most played from it, and Rainmaker because it was a single and Paschendale because it's a fan favorite.

A Matter Of Life And Death
Once again the most played songs from the album, simply because I think they'd be more likely to go for them since they lasted into the second leg of the tour.

The Final Frontier
Because its songs have only been played on its tour, I'm including all five.

The Book Of Souls
All the songs played live from TBOS with the exception of Tears Of A Clown because they dropped it for the second leg. I could've left out The Great Unknown too, but its taking TOAC's place might give it more longevity going forward.

With all that said, vote for one song per album (16 votes total) that you'd want to see live. My votes will be as follows:

Phantom Of The Opera
Murders In The Rue Morgue
Run To The Hills
Flight Of Icarus
Rime Of The Ancient Mariner
Heaven Can Wait
Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son
Tailgunner
Afraid To Shoot Strangers
Lord Of The Flies
The Angel And The Gambler
Brave New World
Paschendale
For The Greater Good Of God
The Talisman
The Red And The Black

-----------------------------

Beyond that, feel free to use this thread to come up with history tours that you think would be pretty cool. The songs don't have to come from the poll FYI.

I excluded the songs from the LOTB setlist because I've already heard them live. This would be a darn cool set.

A mixture of quite rare stuff I'd like to hear and some staples. Hardest to choose from was TFF, as if you want a balanced set you can't have too many long songs and the two from that list I'd pick are long but I'd prefer other long songs to them, so I've gone with Coming Home in the Blood Brothers position in the encore.

Been there, done that... sort of. ;)

Instead of smudging Legacy of the Beast tour thread, I've decided to post this here. Rules are pretty simple:

1. Choose one song per album (not including Iron Maiden and Fear of the Dark, those are already taken)
2. All albums must me included
3. Setlist shouldn't be longer than 1h 35 min
4. Only songs that have been played live at somepoint in their career for at least 30 times.

And while this format does offer more freedom than the one quoted above, I think that my original selection holds up rather well:

Randalf said:
1. Aces High (Powerslave) 4:31
2. Public Enema Number One (No Prayer for the Dying) 4:03
3. Killers (Killers) 4:58
4. Stranger in a Strange Land (Somewhere in Time) 5:43
5. Lord of the Flies (The X-Factor) 5:04
6. Coming Home (The Final Frontier) 5:52
7. Paschendale (Dance of Death) 8:27
8. Futureal (Virtual XI) 3:00
9. Brighter Than a Thousand Suns (A Matter of Life and Death) 8:44
10. Tears of a Clown (The Book of Souls) 4:59
11. Infinite Dreams (Seventh Son of a Seventh Son) 6:08
12. Fear of the Dark (Fear of the Dark) 7:16
13. Iron Maiden (Iron Maiden) 6:05

14. The Prisoner (The Number of the Beast) 5:34
15. Revelations (Piece of Mind) 6:51
16. Brave New World (Brave New World) 6:18

The first version was awkwardly 1:37:02... :D So TBOS contender changed from If Eternity Should Fail (which was the first encore, would be pretty awesome with that intro and all!) into Tears of a Clown, which took the position #10 from The Prisoner which moved later on to open the encores. :) Now it's 1:33:33, if I did the math correctly.

Following the rules of this particular thread, No Prayer & Seventh Son representatives would change from Public Enema and Infinite Dreams to Tailgunner and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. Changing TBOS song for the title track or If Eternity Should Fail would also be very tempting, and maybe Aces High for Rime... and Futureal for The Clansman and Iron Maiden for Phantom of the Opera or Remember Tomorrow... but as it is, let's re-arrange the selection into even more epic, but slightly more ponderous set. Granted, that encore would be fucking amazing.

1. Aces High
2. Tailgunner
3. The Prisoner
4. Brighter Than a Thousand Suns
5. Coming Home
6. Paschendale
7. Afraid to Shoot Strangers
8. Killers
9. Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
10. Lord of the Flies
11. The Clansman
12. Stranger in a Strange Land
13. Brave New World

14. If Eternity Should Fail
15. Revelations
16. Phantom of the Opera

15. Brave New World
16. Wasted Years
Wow, that is actually a very cool setlist!

Whew, all the albums have a clear winner except for POM (three-way tie between "Where Eagles Dare", "Revelations", and "The Trooper") and BNW (tie between "Ghost Of The Navigator" and "Brave New World").

For me an “ultimate” history tour would be full of deep cuts and rarely played songs. The cool stuff that serious fans really appreciate, but that casual fans might not know.

I love what Gamma Ray did with their two “Skeletons” tours and live albums — they let the fans choose which songs they wanted to hear out of their entire catalog, minus all the songs they’d already commonly have in their set lists. It made for a couple of awesome sets that were love letters to their fans.

If I were to take that approach to a one-song-per-album set list, I’d probably do something like this:

Judas Be My Guide
Back In The Village
When The River Runs Deep
Strange World
The Longest Day
Total Eclipse
Blood On The World’s Hands
Fates Warning
Montsegur
Como Estais Amigos
Starblind
Still Life
Only The Good Die Young
———
Prodigal Son
Out Of The Silent Planet
Alexander The Great
