Listened to this album last night. Very good, but it didn't quite do it for me. I'm not sure why... they have many elements to their style that I like. And though the vocals aren't my exact preference, they were far better than I expected. It's sort of like individual bits or moments constantly impressed me as the album played, and yet the total impression it left behind wasn't even close to being as good. The whole is less than the sum of the parts, somehow.

This is certainly just a matter of my preference in music. I can hear that the record is masterfully made, the songs are well written, the musicianship is great. It's just not the style I prefer to hear - though the more progressive sections of this album come very close.

Yes it's a matter of taste but still this album could be a grower though. On the Epica forum I read some complaints after a first listen but after a while they get more and more positive.

Witnessing an Epica live gig is imo much cooler than playing the record. Of course that goes for most bands but with Epica I have that feeling a bit more than with other bands.

I'm getting the recordone on friday  :yey:

I managed to stay away from YouTube and other downloads, I've only heard Resign to Surrender and Unleashed (and the teasers + the ''making of'' videos)

I've been listening to this album almost nonstop for weeks now. Truly their best.

I agree 100%

The general theme of the album seems to be about freedom; and I love the defense of freedom of speech in Martyr of the Free Word, but some songs talks way too much about ''how horrible humanity has become'', which is a view that's common, but I don't share it at all. But it shouldn't really matter, I like black metal even though I'm not a satanist.

And I still think some of the lyrics are a bit ''messy''. They switch by talking about freedom to preach about how you should live, like Semblance of Liberty, and it just doesen't connect.

If you are refering to Epica, they are NOT black metal much less "satanists." as to their "how horrible hummanity has become" I think it just refers to the broken systems, whether religion or politics, but they usually champion individual freedom, achievement and potential...

I didn't say they were satanists or black metal. I was just making a comparison. What I meant was: I can listen to music without having to agree with its message 100%.
