The Love and Hate of Metallica

Some find the music of Ride the Lightning delivered too aggressively?

I glad grateful that my taste is not limited to the soft and polished realms of our most beloved genre that is called metal.

If it was, I would have to discard countless of bands I have learned to appreciate now.

Which is it Forostar? Softies or pussies ;) I'm not gonna get into name calling but what I will say is, many people do discard bands based on how aggressive they are. I have no love for Metallica or any other band of that ilk. Doesn't make me right or wrong. Just makes me different to you.

I decided to put it more politely. ;)
How do you feel about Maiden's debut album? Damned aggressive.

Never meant to say that your taste is right or wrong but it makes me realize how happy I am with my own.

It is and songs like Be Quick or Be Dead are extremely heavy for Maiden but it just doesn't fall into the "thrash trap", at least not for me. It's hard to have anything but love or the original album, there's just so many luscious moments on there. Though I do prefer Bruce singing those songs. Would love to hear him have a crack at Strange World.

you may not like Megadeth, too, because James is a far superior vocalist to Dave.

It's funny you say this, because I actually love some of Megadeth's material, far more than Metallica's, sure Dave isn't a "great" vocalist, but he utilizes his voice awesomely.

I was somewhat surprised by the lack of respect for Metallica on this forum.
I had them seeded third in the World Cup and they were out the first chance the voters had.
But in retrospect I shouldn't have been surprised. They seem to be a very polarizing band.
They just never have been polarizing for me. For me they have always been OK to good.
I like a lot of their stuff, even after Justice, but I've never loved the band, even Puppets and Lightning era.

There are a lot of people here who don't really care about Metallica, I see. Well, I do. They're my fifth favorite band and I love their stuff. James CAN sing, if you don't like the band because of his singing, you may not like Megadeth, too, because James is a far superior vocalist to Dave.

Oh, there is NO comparison... James is WAY better than Dave when it comes to singing!!! In fact, I think he has the best voice out of anybody from the Big 4.

I know that the "big four" category was of relevance in the late eighties and early nineties, but why do people still keep bringing it up? The only band that has kept a distinguished thrash sound throughout most of their career is Slayer. Incidentally, I think they are the best of the four by a wide margin, although I don't mean to say I don't like the others. But with all other bands, I have the feeling that they have departed from their roots and returned to thrash recently because they thought it'd sell more albums. Only Megadeth has been somewhat successful in rejuvenating their sound, in my opinion, and The System Has Failed and Endgame are among the best albums in their career.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not a genre nazi. I'm all for a band changing their style for creative reasons. Many bands have done so successfully, on artistic grounds. So that is not my problem. I also don't only listen to particular genres or choose the bands I listen to on those grounds. My problem is that people put bands in the spotlight of a particular genre that haven't played music of this style for the better part of their career, while there are other bands out there that actually have developed the style itself and are much more representative of the genre itself. Foro has already mentioned Exodus, one of the best thrash metal bands there have ever been. I'd also add Annihilator, Testament and Sodom as bands that have done much more for the development of the genre in different directions than Metallica and Megadeth ever have. Not to mention that if you want pure, straightforward thrash, bands such as Death Angel, Razor or Overkill are the ones you should put your money on. But with this big four myth, most people probably think that is the alpha and omega of thrash metal and only listen to those, and if they only put on the most popular albums by those bands, they will hardly get an idea what thrash metal actually is supposed to sound like. Unless, of course, they just enter the band name in their p2p client and download Fistful of Metal or Hell Awaits by accident.

I am going a bit off topic here, but I found these bits of "news" on the Exodus' wiki page which is related to Slayer and Metallica members:

Exodus toured with Rob Zombie and Slayer in 2011 on their Hell on Earth tour as the opening act. Gary Holt filled in for Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman during the tour after Hanneman contracted necrotizing fasciitis caused by a spider bite.

On February 4, 2012 a Paul Baloff Memorial Reunion Concert was held at the Oakland Metro Opera House. Former an current members included Kirk Hammett, Rick Hanolt, Gary Holt, Jeff Andrews, Lee Altus, Rob Dukes, Tom Hunting and Jack Gibson. It was the first they have all played together since 1983.

The hatred probably comes from those who grew up with Metallica.
I think it may well be those that got into Metallica just after that. Around the pre-Black album era. I could be totally off the mark, but I was of that era that grew up on Metallica and don't subscribe to the bashing of them.

I don't really like Load/Reload but all their other studio albums are very enjoyable at the very least. Even St Anger. IN MY OPINION.

In my opinion, once Cliff died, part of Metallica died as well..

Although I've come to favor Jason over Cliff in terms of bass playing and image, I feel that the first 3 Metallica albums with Cliff are the best the band has ever done and they haven't been matched by any of their other efforts even remotely.

...And Justice for All contains too many overly dragged out songs that don't quite hit my musical g-spot. Dyers Eve is the only real highlight.

The Black Album lost its touch with me a long time ago. I used to dig all the hits on that album, but now I've heard them over the radio and such so many times that they just became boring to listen to.

Load, ReLoad, and St. Anger don't suit my taste at all, and to be honest I barely gave Death Magnetic a chance at listening because of it. With the exception of a few snippets here and there.

And I'll always hate them for what they did to Dave.

Really? So... your pissed that thanks to them firing him they essentially gave us Megadeth? Mustaines sole fuel has been to out-do Metallica and in many ways he has, starting with being more consistent.

I like Metallica, the only album I don't particularly care for is St. Anger.

Lulu is more of a Lou Reed album than a Metallica album and is better approached from that direction.

Listening to St. Anger (the album) for the first time since 2008, at least.

Lars Ulrich must have played on these drums when he recorded this "album":

I will keep saying this about St Anger...

I have the CD with a bonus DVD showing the band play each track in a garage. I ripped the audio from this to make my own St Anger CD.

The sound is 1000x better than the studio effort and, from my point of view, makes it a decent album.

Okay guys, there is something I'd like to get off my chest...

First off, I am a huge Metallica fan! They introduced me to the metal scene in high school and I've been hooked ever since. I love their old stuff, Death Magnetic, and even some things off Load and ReLoad. To me, they are my heroes!

However, I've noticed a lot of hatred towards Metallica within the metal community. Now, I understand that they have done a lot of questionable things...

1) Cutting their hair all at once
2) Doing some questionable song writing in the 90s
3) No solos in St. Anger (I blame Bob Rock for that)
4) Suing Napster
5) Lulu

But aside those things, I've never seen soo much hatred towards a band like this. And it's not even anger that has meaning behind it. It's just a bunch of angry metalheads saying ignorant things like "They suck!" or "They can't write good sh-t anymore!" and they bitch and complain on and on about how they want Kill 'em All part 2, 3, and 4.

So since all of you Maiden fans are very nice and respectful (and awesome as hell), I was wondering if I could ask all of you why there is soo much ignorant hatred towards Metallica?

There’s only two things I hate about Metallica.

1.) Kirk Hammet is the most mediocre lead guitar player ever. Listening to his solos, with the fact that he’s regarded as a virtuoso in mind , is grating to me.

2.) They bridged the gap between popular music and Metal. I hate that. Now, more enlightened types can certainly say that it’s trite of me to feel that way. I disagree, on a philosophical level that more is merrier, and this can be seen with the conflicts inherent in an expanding social world, not just within music. There’s nothing wrong with having a specific and isolated communal identity. In fact, we are drawn to exactly that by nature. They showed Them our goat path.
