Some thoughts:

All The Fools Sailed Away. The vocals! And for some reason the chorus of this song is really melancholic.

Rebellion In Dreamland, easy. Typical Gamma Ray formula, but it sounds so epic, captivating and perfect. One of Kai's best songs.

Cowboy Song has great solos and melodies, but The Sails Of Charon is one of Scorpions best 70's songs imo. Interesting and better.

The prog matchup. 20 minutes is too much for me, quality ideas or not. Learning To Live is a cool Dream Theater with lots of interesting twists and melodies(!). Really nice and fun. It reminds me of Nightwish.

In Flames was quite bad, not a fan of the other stuff I've heard from them but it was a good bit better than this track which was basically Korn Dio

Gamma Ray was standard euro power metal, Voodoo Chile is a masterpiece

Tie of the round, both tracks classics Cowboy Song

Angel of Death wasn't great with the arrangement particularly annoying Estranged

Edge of Sanity not my cup of tea, Mandatory Suicide brilliant

DT aren't great, I could probably take or leave the rest of 2112 after Overture/Syrinx but that part is brilliant

Very easy Dio bias.

Gamma Ray win over shreddy blues, despite Hendrix's legacy.

The main riff of The Sails of Charon is just so damn cool and the lead guitar work is awesome. That's sweep-picking in 1977! Such a dark, killer early metal tune. I love Thin Lizzy and Cowboy Song is a classic, but Scorps win here for their mystical and more metallic tune.

Estranged is a big nope for me dawg. Angel of Death is shaky, but it wollops GnR's piano power ballad.

Slayer have plenty of better songs in this game and this one sounds weak as hell (especially vocally). Edge of Sanity are more interesting.

I love Rush. 2112 is a cool song. But, if I'm being honest, the only part of 2112 that I love is less than 2 minutes (Temples of Syrinx). Learning to Live is a top tier Dream Theater song and easily takes this for me.

The fools, and Dio, sailed right past the quiet place. Gamma Ray has launched a rebellion, no voodoo children invited. Speaking of sailing, Scorpions don't allow any cowboys on their boat. Guns N' Roses knows we're estranged from the real song "Angel of Death". Look, I've made a mandatory suicide joke before for Slayer and it's getting old. Dream Theater has really learned to win, though.

Midnight Sun, not because it's my nominee. Helloween are miles ahead of Guns! The song is a (Maiden-esque) true gem. So much better. Catchiness, melody, drumming, instrumental section.
Megadeth's Rust In Peace... Polaris is a very solid riff-y thrash, but Rainbow's Man On The Silver Mountain edges it with at least the melodic approach. Although the studio version is so slow, live '77 is better.
Armored Saint, because of the vocals. And Book Of Blood is solid old school metal, the vocal ideas aren't the most interesting (still fine; no chorus?), but the solo is worth it. Effective song.
The Zoo's rhythm is so captivating. Especially with Scorpions' trademark melodic style.
Unleash The Archers' Abyss is good (melodic and memorable power metal), WASP's Chainsaw is a classic metal. Both are quality, but I love Blackie's voice (better too) and the vocal ideas have more character.
Avantasia's The Scarecrow is better and more interesting, easy. It's time for me to vote for them. Quality stuff. Great vocal ideas overall (impactful). The calm middle parts is too long, but add to the dreamy vibe that fits the Dio-esque verses. Anthrax's song is not for me.

The vocals in Helloween make my whole body itch, but I just can't be arsed with Guns N Roses anymore.

RIP vs. MOTSM is a very difficult matchup. I'll be honest, the title track is one of my least favorite songs on RIP, whereas Man On The Silver Mountain is an all-time classic tune. Dio bias.

Armored Saint - Book of Blood is an emotive, awesome, surprising journey of a tune with a great John Bush performance. Winner.

Disciples of the Watch, WATCH!

Abyss
by many, many miles.

I will take goofy, overwrought Avantasia over non-BushThrax any day.

"Mr. Brownstone" was never more than an average GN'R tune. "Midnight Sun" is kinda messy, but much more my thing. Helloween.

The title track to Rust in Peace is strangely enough one of the weakest tracks on the album, while "Man on the Silver Mountain" is a flawless masterpiece. Rainbow.

I really like everything about "Book of Blood"; the vocals are great, the tune is great, the band is great - it just happens that I like my nominee more. Children of Bodom.

Easy vote for Testament - Chuck Billy has one of the best voices in thrash. On the other hand, I never understood why "The Zoo" is considered one of Scorpions' best - honestly, it's a bore.

I still don't get much of the hype around Unleash the Archers, but I just can't stand Blackie's vocals, so it's another easy choice.

"I Am the Law"'s riff is more fun than the entirety of "The Scarecrow". Well, it's actually a decent song, but I'm enjoying Anthrax way more.

Midnight Sun isn't so great, but I don't care GNR this evening.

Love Polaris, especially the outro, Man on the Silver Mountain is in another league.

Do I vote for Book of Blood (great on every front btw), or do I succumb my biases? I've been in a shreddy mood lately. Book of Blood

Testament
? Difficult

Abyss is a bit long, it's still good UTA though. Didn't remember Chainsaw Charlie being so rad.

Easy Anthrax easy life

The midnight sun shines bright on Helloween. Megadeth has fallen short of climbing up Rainbow's silver mountain. The book of blood says not to trust in lake bodom. Armored Saint. The disciples of the watch were going to win, but they got lost looking at animals in the zoo, like Scorpions. Chainsaw Charlie cut through the abyss as WASP wins. Avantasia wins. I guess scarecrows are the law now?

I'll give the nod to I Am, as it's more interesting musically. Tyrant (and Sad Wings in general) is very overrated.

I feel absolutely disgusting about voting for Motley Crue, but Pierce the Veil are just a shitty emo band.

Harvester of Sorrow is better than most Iced Earth songs, but especially Melancholy.

Thorn over whales.

The vocals in both A7X and Angra are really, really not good to me, but Nothing To Say is far more interesting instrumentally.

The Conjuring.

Tyrant is one of Priest's most effective 70's songs, I really enjoy it, but I also appreciate the ideas of the 11 minute(!) I Am.
Kickstart My Heart is at least fun.
Harvester Of Sorrow is not one of my favorite Metallica songs, but the riffing is brutal. IE's Melancholy wins because of the chorus, it's just too good. Effective semi-ballad, always cool.
BG's Thorn. Interesting medieval power metal. The chorus adds for sure. They remind me of Grave Digger.
A7X's Afterlife because it brings a melancholic sound. Nothing To Say is solid (riffs), but it's not that effective for me.
Bon Jovi's Livin' On A Prayer. Hard rock and glam classic. Melodic and memorable. They have some moments.

I did not like "I Am" as much this time as when it previously was up in this game, though it's still decent enough. But I do think Priest has the better song overall here.

"King for A Day" is horrible, but at least it's not Mötley Crüe, and for that reason alone I'm voting Pierce the Veil (not that it makes any difference except for my own piece of mind).

The third match is the toughest, but I suppose "Harvester of Sorrow" is one of my least favourite Justice-songs, while I have a soft spot for "Melancholy" (still think it's better than "I Died for You"). Iced Earth.

Blind Guardian is much more my thing than Gojira.

Avenged Sevenfold, honestly, are decent musicians, but not very good songwriters. The different parts of "Afterlife" are all over the place, and the chorus especially doesn't fit at all. Angra's song isn't anything special either, but I liked it much better.

And finally, in stark contrast to the incoherence of "Afterlife", "Livin' on a Prayer" is just a phenomenal piece of songcrafting. However, I cannot in good faith vote for it over a classic Megadeth tune.

I Am is are great for the first half and begins to fall off when it goes instrumental. It would take it easily if not for that part, Tyrant is more consistent.

I'm just sitting there scrolling the Slay the Spire Reddit and I see this:
1739620708860.png
And I have two thoughts:
1) I'm living in a simulation
2) What a loser supposedly exaggerated for dramatic effect
Kickstart My Heart very fun

The Coming Curse is the only song on SWTWC that's competitive with any of the first 7 songs on AJFA, not that I dislike Melancholy.

Hmmmm... I generally love Blind Guardian more, but the tapping riff really hits the spot. But I think most of the times I'll pick Thorn.

I love Afterlife, I think the production hurts the solo a lot. I think it's the snare sound. Angra for me, it's both more my thing and the singer is much better.

I was sure I'm going to vote for Bon Jovi, forgot The Conjuring is actually really good.

"But, Mr. Trump, I thought we were going to get a theocracy?" "No," he replied. "I am a tyrant, you Judas Priest." Motley Crue gets to kickstart a heart that's been pierced by a veil I guess. Metallica and Iced Earth have duelled to a tie. Melancholy and sorrow are basically the same thing, so it makes sense. Gojira got pricked by a thorn, by Blind Guardian. Sorry, they can't all be winners. Angra condemns Avenged Sevenfold to the afterlife. And finally, Megadeth conjures up a win, leaving Bon Jovi without a prayer.

Monster Magnet, I guess. I don't think they'll take this one though.

"After Forever" is a lot of fun, but this should be an easy curb-stomp for Meshuggah (although I don't have much faith in this forum).

"Killing Yourself to Live" is like the sixth best song on Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, while "Damage Inc." is one of thrash's all time best.

Happy to vote Dokken and Ratt. "Lay It Down" fucks.

Power metal pity vote.
