The German Thread

I thought this was a remarkable news item, hope it fits here. Hmm, maybe the madness forum was a better idea.

Germany town may be given tallest Jesus statue

A town in Germany may become the location for the world's largest Jesus statue. Estate agent Harry Vossberg wants to place a statue measuring 55 metres in height. The mayor of Kaufbeuren Stef Bosse is interested in the project, but does not want to contribute to its costs. He hopes the statue will encourage tourism in the town, and wants to open a hotel for pilgrims in the town.

Two other German towns have turned down the statue. It will be 17 metres taller than the world famous Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro.

Ever been to Kaufbeuren Perun? Soon you have to check this out!   :D

Never been there, though. I even had to check where that actually is. In Bavaria. And now, that doesn't surprise me to the least.

These guys are certainly looking forward to it!

Yeah... Bavaria is the only state in Germany that still has crucifixes in the classrooms.

So are they mostly catholic? Because being overwhelmingly Lutheran (or nothing at all) crosses, crucifixes and any other "crutches" are frowned upon... right?

I just wrote an essay on Verganenheitsbelwältigung and German national identity.

That's cool. I'd be interested in hearing your opinion on that.

Overwhelmingly Catholic, indeed, although there is a Lutheran majority around Nuremberg. You could almost say that Bavaria is the closest possible to fundamentalism in a secular country. The crucifix thing isn't a matter of being Catholic or Lutheran though, but of being conservative or not. I've been to a Lutheran school in Bavaria for a short time, and they had crucifixes there too.
It's not like Bavaria is not secular, it's just that it has a number of very religious politicians whose opinions and statements sometimes shock and/or amuse the rest of the republic.

I quite like Germany, i went on a music tour to the Black Forest last year, playing at places like Lake Titisee (Teeheehee). Very enjoyable, however, our hotel staff were less than accommodating.
I don't have a negative viewpoint of Germany at all, although Germans can bear the brunt of my jokes from time to time, but no more than anyone else, French, a certain country that shall remain nameless through fear of pissing a mod off ;), etc etc.

But overall, yeah, i like Germany, nice scenery, nice food, good amount of culture. It's a shame many people will always see Germany for the old time Dictatorship Reichs it used to be. But i guess these people just don't matter!
