The de-intellectualization of Canadian universities

Don't you think that learning a second language in general will do the trick to your usage of your own language? This is a real question, not a rethorical one. I am an advocate of teaching 'dead' languages, for various reasons, but for improving your own language, I think it doesn't matter if it is a living or a dead one.

No doubt it does, but there is a reason why I chose history as my example, becuase history deals with a lot of dead and archaic languages, not just contemporary ones, as does archeology, at any rate, you get it now, so it's all good.

About the Universities situation. Well it's no better here either. Recently there was an affair about buying diplomas in one of Serbia's lesser universities - the one in Kraguyevac I think. There was an undercover cop/detective, who discovered it all. Nobody was outraged by it really since the general public is aware (or is it?) of the degree of corruption, and that it is present in the educational field too.

Student motivation/dedication/ability is also a concern. For example, some of my classmates think of studying subjects on which they do not excel now, at the high school level - I'm not talking grades, but overall interest. When you go to Faculty you should strive for being the best in your class.

Belgrade University is now almost completely in accordance with the Bologna convention - which means more time spent in the classrooms, more tests, more written examinations of student's knowledge, students gaining points (the introduction of the point system) for the activity shown at the lectures... no more campaign type studying where one could spend little time at the University and just cram the knowledge of a subject in his head 2 months before the exam and pass.  This is a very good change imo.
