The Concert Thread

Dirkschneider were SUPERB last Saturday at the Hammersmith Odeon in London. The setlist was heavy metal paradise, playing Balls to the Wall in its entirety plus an encore of Fast as a Shark.

They were supporting Saxon, who were really good too, with a nice setlist featuring all of Wheels of Steel and a selection of (mostly) 80s classics.

An excellent night of old school heavy metal. :edmetal: :edmetal: :edmetal: :edmetal: :edmetal:

Have Patti Smith at the Chicago Theater coming in. Need to snag a Paul McCartney ticket soon as well for the Monday show here. If this is the last year of the current tour, I will have seen the second date of the tour in Seattle in 2022 and the second to last date of the tour in Chicago.
Patti's show is tomorrow. Production holds I guess were released for McCartney today, snagged a ticket on the floor for $200 cheaper than what's going around in the upper bowl on resale. (My wallet's still cussing me out.)

Paul was much better than when I saw him in Seattle three years ago. Was expecting with further age for him to sound even more raspy than he did then, but I think Seattle being the second show after the break for Covid required him to warm up a bit. Then he was left rather exposed during songs where it's just him and a solo instrument like Maybe I'm Amazed or Blackbird, but he was better on them this time around.

Funny moment during Let Em In where I believe the piano was slightly out of tune, prompting them to stop 20 seconds in and then eventually restart it.

After not going to concerts in a while this year I've gone to three.

First I went to Ghost in Mexico City. A childhood friend of mine convinced me to go. We hadn't seen each other in like 8 years or so, then he said it'd be just like when we were kids and we went to our first concert (Metallica '99). So I buy a very expensive concert ticket and a not so expensive plane ticket and take some time off of work. We go to the concert, I buy my cup and t-shirt, 5 minutes before the concert is set to start they turn on all the lights and announce through the speaker system that the concert has been cancelled due to Tobias coming down with food poisoning. So no show. At least I got to catch up with my friend.

Next up was Hammerfall. I had told my friend during my trip to Mexico City I wish I could watch them, because they seem like a fun live band due to the structure of their songs: simple, catchy, repetitive choruses and a lot of (ooooh oooohs). I started getting nervous, because it got delayed due to "technical issues" It started an hour and a half late, but at least there was a show. It was exactly how I imagined it. It felt sooo good, I walked out of there as if I just gotten the best massage in the world with a great therapy session lol. Great show.

Finally I went to Apocalyptica last night. This one was.... a mix bag for several reasons. I got th tickets to go with a specific someone, because I didn't really want to go since I had seen them three times already. That someone is no longer in the picture and I considered selling the tickets, but a coworker said she'd go with me. It was weird watching the show wishing the other person was there, also this is the tour for their Plays Metallica vol. II.
I remember reading an interview in which Eica said he didn't want Apocalyptica to be known for being a Metallica cover band, yet... that's the band the cover the most and they've released two albums (three if you count the anniversary edition of the first one with bonus tracks) of nothing but. Not to mention the tracks on Inquisition and Cult....
Anyway, I'm kinda worn out on Metallica and that's all they played. From a logistical perspective I get it, they don't have to worry about hiring a singer. Still, I wish they would've played some originals even if they were just instrumentals. I didn't buy the album, which was available at the merch table, but I did get their Cell-0 release.

Man, that was brutal.

As I do not have any more gigs in my diary before the end of the year, I thought it would be nice if we could choose the top 3 concerts we have been to in 2025. I'll start:

1. Manic Street Preachers, Bristol Beacon, 26/04/2025 - Superb gig on their Critical Thinking UK tour, featuring 5 songs off their new album, and an excellent selection of classics and deep cuts, with the band in fine form.
2. Dirkschneider, Eventim Apollo (to me it will always be the Hammersmith Odeon though), 15/11/2025 - Heavy metal paradise supporting Saxon, which were always great. Balls to the Wall played in its entirety, followed by an encore of Fast as a Shark? It does not get any better than that! With Saxon's setlist featuring 16 songs (out of a total of 21) from the Wheels of Steel/Strong Arm of the Law/Denim and Leather trilogy, this was a celebration of unadulterated old school heavy metal.
3. Imagine Dragons, Ippodromo Snai La Maura, Milan, 27/05/2025 - A very positive surprise. I was only familiar with their hits, but the whole show was impressive, from the song selection to the use of the massive screens. An excellent night out with my family in the company of 75000 people.

Honourable mentions for Manic Street Preachers at Pryzm in Kingston-upon-Thames on 01/02/2025 (album launch gig in an intimate venue), The Darkness at G Live in Guildford on 11/03/2025, and Iron Maiden at London Stadium on 28/06/2025.

Roll on 2026!

Not been to many this year, 4 Maiden - Malahide, London and 2 nights in Paris. Other than that Unto Others and W A S.P. playing the first album.

Already have more lined up for next year, Blaze, GNR, 2 nights at Metallica, Knebworth and Paris for Maiden, and will probably do Sepultura's last european gig as its in Dublin and I've never seen them, nor Biohazard and Sacred Reich, who are also on the bill

As frequently as I travel for concerts, been lucky so far this hasn't happened to me yet. Almost happened back in May when I drove 3 hours to Austin to see Testament play all of Practice What You Preach at an outdoor venue downtown. Opened with the entire lp. During the 10th & last song on the lp (instrumental Confusion Fusion), they stopped after 10 seconds due to lightning!
Luckily, started again 20 minutes later when the storm passed.

Sorry that happened to you

It's a common occurrence here, Montezuma's Revenge and whatnot. Happened to Christopher Johnson (Therion) Joked about it on the DVD booklet from their 2006 concerts, and Joacim also brought it up during the concert last Saturday lol. Yet they keep coming back.... says a lot about how much they like our food and the crowds, I guess.

Small note, I'm currently listening to Apocalyptica's Cell-0 (Might become my new favorite of their's) and looking through the booklet. It says it was made exclusively for Mexico and limited to 500 copies.... seems VERY sus, but kinda glad I bought it now if it is indeed limited to only 500 printings, kinda like my Dream Theater LP, which is still missing.
