The fact is - subatomic particles colliding at high speeds is something that occurs frequently. The LHC is just a tool to be able to observe this under controlled conditions. But when the tabloids see an opportunity to predict Armageddon, they grab it. Zare comments on what journalists know about black holes and singularities. I think most of them don't even know what a molecule is.
