Thank God For Finland!

I was driving aimlessly last night when my phone rings and my mother tells me that there is something on TV I just have to watch, so I make my way to her house. It turns out it was the Eurovision competition. For those of you who don't know what it is it is an international talent show basically where every (or most... not sure) European country sends one of their top acts to represent them and the country with the best song wins... something, don't know don't care.

At any rate, she told me to come over because she told me that Finland had just played and she said,"It was one of those weird bands you like, and I said to myself 'angel has to see this'." Unfortunately I didn't catch the act, but I stuck around just to see if they played it again. Much to my dissapointment the rest of the countries played horribly unoriginal "britney spears" type pop songs one after another. I usually hail Europe as a continent of deep diversity and it shows in the massively varied tastes its people have in music and intead, in this massive contest one country after another had some standard pop song to sing making it look more like the Billboard Awards than Eurovision.

But my suffering would soon end as they started recaping the songs that were played and sure enough they replayed part of Finland's song and my mom was right, While I don't know the name of the group, they dressed in medieval armor a lá Gwar and the singer carried a HUGE fake axe and they wore masks that made them look like they came straight out of Armies of Darkness. They blasted their heavenly death metal upon everybody and I rejoiced for two reasons: 1. It was Metal! and 2. They were the only "different" act out there, in a contest loaded with pop acts Finland had the guts to do different! Well Poland had a regueton act, but I've said it once and i'll say it before, Rap/hip hop/regueton are not music... baseline beats don't make it so.

Thus I was pleased because it was my favorite genre of music and they were by far the most original in that respect. Not to mention they made the finals :D

NOTE: I have nothing agaisnt pop music, but the songs at the contest lacked originality in more was than one that made it quite dissapointing...

The band representing Finland is in fact Lordi, and their song is called 'Hard Rock Hallelujah'. While I wouldn't quite call what they play "Death Metal", I have to admit that this is quite an unusual style for this poppy crap Eurovision thingy.

If you want, the video is available on the Net. A refreshing change in the middle of all this sugary boring event. Well done Finland!  :ok:

One of the best things about Eurovision is the voting. Well worth watching just for that.

But I have often thought that the UK should do something like this, totally take the rise out of the competition and send in an extreme type act - on the basis they do not take themselves seriously. But year in year out the UK does. Why, I don't know but no other bugger is going to vote for any UK entry.

Well, Lordi get my vote all the way!  Even if they were complete crap and I hated metal, I would still vote for them on account of their costumes!  Especially the drummer, I love those teeth!

Incidentally, I actually quite like Lordi's style.  They seem to be a more traditional hard rock/metal style, with some catchy AC/DC-esque rhythms and tunes in there.  I quite like their vocalist as well-he reminds me of the later-era Sentenced, with Ville Laihiala's grating vocals, although he can pack some decidedly Halford screams!  Quite impressive, when you're weidling a battle-axe and a costume that would make Weta Workshop erase all concept drawings of orcs and start again... ;)

Well, I have to disagree on something.  While it's true that most of the songs were pop crap and lacked originality,  there were some good ballads such as the Irish one or Cyprus ( these weren't that original,  but at least they were good songs ),  and there was of course Lithuania.  My God!  Now THAT was original!  Don't know if anybody saw them,  they were hilarious!  Six guys ( presumably the country's top singers ) all serious looking dressed up in tuxedos, and you expect some kind of great vocal performance.  The first one starts singing :"We are the winners... Of Eurovision!  Vote for us!"  That was bloody funny!  And they passed!  There were two acts I wanted to pass in the finals ( them and Finland ) and they passed!  It's the first time I've enjoyed Eurovision.  Today are the finals and I'll definetly watch them.

:oI'm sorry but do my eyes decieve me? Brian Kennedy's "song" is one of the cheesiest pieces of tripe that I have ever had the misfortune of hearing, but each to their own. I can proudly say that I voted for Lordi on Thursday night in the semi-finals and will vote constantly for them tonight. Lets bring on the "a-rock-alypse"! (they could give Manowar a run for their money for the cheese factor)

I missed the grand prix? Shame on me.

Well, I had better things to do :D

I hope they lose.  they are giving a bad name to heavy metal... as though we needed that

Some of the media sources such as the BBC and the Irish News (:P) are really ignorant about this.  They are stereotyping all metal bands byt he standars that "Lordi" are setting without properly researching them.  for example, the Irish News called them "Death Metal" and the BBC said they haven't revealed their names (untrue) and they are satanic (untrue).

*sigh*

PS, come on Brian Kennedy :D

If the UK can enter Maiden next year, can the aliens stop fucking leprechauns and leave 'em to the rabbits?

God no!  Maiden is a serious band!  It would be a disgrace to see them in Eurovision.  I enjoyed Finland because they were a funny act.  Maiden in Eurovision!  Bliah >:(

Sounds like Greece will be giving Cyprus 12 points this year again. Now there's a surprise.  :p

Oh yes! It's a barometer of international politics and incredibly exciting to watch. :p

Actually, I used to like watching the song contest, in a perv way. Not for the music (which is usually disgusting) but for the diversity of the participants. Sadly, the last few times have turned Eurovision into a parody of itself.
