Surveillance

Well, maybe it died of natural causes [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/tongue.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\":P\" border=\"0\" alt=\"tongue.gif\" /]

Thanks for the support guys!

The defense went quite well, I think. Sometimes you just know you aced something, and this is one of those times. There were a few questions from way out in left field, (some of which had absolutely nothing to do with my thesis, sadly) but I managed to answer them satisfactorialy whilst making the prof look a bit petty.

I'll be glad to send a copy to anyone who cares to read it.

I actually was being (almost) completely serious. I am VERY anti-government. I think that cameras in places like banks are OK but eventually there will be more crime and cameras only in public places won't be enough. In 20 years I think that They will have cameras in many homes. My friends also think I'm just joking but I do believe that the U.S. Government is corrupt. Rich people who are taken to court and can win even if their guilty, O.J. Simpson comes to mind :: [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/tongue.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\":P\" border=\"0\" alt=\"tongue.gif\" /] , while innocent poor people who can't afford a good lawyer are sent to prison. How can you say that is fair? "All Men Are Created Equal."

I can perfectly understand that you're not satisfied with your government. I can also perfectly understand that you're afraid of government authority. It has been known to do bad things in the past, it does bad things now, and it will do bad things in the future.
However, let me point out that anarchy isn't the solution.

Let's organizse a Anarchy Club! At the first meeting I'll introduce a motion to become president.

I'll kill you for that [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/tongue.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\":P\" border=\"0\" alt=\"tongue.gif\" /]

Aaaaah...anarchy, my favourite subject [img src=\"style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/smile.gif\" style=\"vertical-align:middle\" emoid=\":)\" border=\"0\" alt=\"smile.gif\" /]

I thought I wouldn't reply in this thread but I must, albeit a bit off the original topic.

Along with many people from my home country, I have developed an allergy to bureaucracy and to arrogance of authority. Suppose it also has to do with my personality - I find it hard to be subject to any kind of restriction, be it in marriage, at work or in politics. Unfortunately, despite my cocky face that has got me in trouble a few times and my trash-the-place urges, I have to say democracy is the only functioning political system. As imperfect as it is. Surveillance and law enforcement being part of it.

On freedom in general.
You can be free and stick to what you want and believe in. I really believe that freedom is a state mind, rather than a physical state. You are free until you hit the wall of hurting someone else, especially someone close to you, a loved one. Still, retaining *inner* freedom, freedom of thought, freedom to follow your instincts, is vital.

Sadly, there are situations when it's very difficult to retain this freedom. And having to fight for it day by day is not only exhausting, it's excruciating.

The funny thing is that most people take freedom for granted. So did I, I guess. But it all boils down to that overplayed Joni Mitchell song...
