SPARE RIB - What Steve wanted to call Gypsy's Kiss originally

Paul Sears, drummer with Gypsy's Kiss (and later Iron Maiden manager in 1977) posted this photo of a postcard he received from Steve Harris in the summer of 1974. As you can see Steve thought the band should be called Spare Rib.

He also posted an old picture of St. Nicholas Church Hall on Aberfeldy Street, Poplar where Influence played their first gig in July 1974. The line up featured Steve Harris (Bass), Bob Verschoyle (Vocals), Paul Sears (Drums), Dave Smith (Guitar), Roy Middleton (Guitar).

It was also Maidens first gig.

Dave Beasley (Lights) arranged a talent contest in July 1974 which Influence took part in, They played 3 songs, the 2nd of which was the one Steve mucked up the bass intro.

Steve met up again with Dave Beasley in early 1976. Steve probably felt the band were ready to go out and play by this time and got Dave to arrange to get them the gig at Church because he had the contacts and it would be a good test before they tried to get into the pub circuit.

Nice photos by the way.

"Spare Rib" sounds eminently like a pub band - if he had gone ahead with this but still written the same stuff he did, would he have been destined to flunk most egregiously? Or would all have gone on unchanged and we'd now all be thinking that "Spare Rib" is actually an amazingly metal name?

Interesting indeed when gems like this emerge. Or maybe I'm just nosey. Wonder where he sent it from?
