Soundhouse CD: bootleg vs real, how to tell?

Hello!

I apologize if this has been discussed before, and I'm sure it has, but I did search these forums, and couldn't find the answer.

How does one tell the difference between a real copy and a bootleg copy of the Soundhouse Tapes CD that was issues in The States a few years back?  I have a copy sitting here, and would like to know if I got the real deal or not.

I joined your community just today to ask this question, but, seeing as how lately I've been on quite the Maiden kick, I'm sure I'll make myself quite at home.  Standard introduction:  Paul is my favorite vocalist, though I love the Bruce albums, and enjoy the Blaze ones.  I think "Dance Of Death" may actually be the best album the band has ever done.  Individual favorite track is "Run To The Hills"

Thanks for reading!

Thanks for the brilliant fast reply.  Checking it out now.

Just went and looked.  Are you referring to :

Unless I am missing something, that only discusses the 7" vinyl version, not the CD re-issue.  That's one of the sites I looked at before I posted here actually, I tried to do some research first.  But, frustration in finding nothing concrete made me decide to come here and ask the experts.

Thanks again,

Zoloft

I misread it.  Probably you'll get your best response tomorrow after the Euros wake up.  I have not seen the CD myself.

LC,

Again, thanks for your prompt response!  I will anxiously await the awakening of those on the eastern side of the pond.

Forgive my ignorance, but how on earth can a CD version of the Soundhouse Tapes be "the real deal"?

But welcome to this treshold of Maidenfreaks!

There was a limited CD reissue of the Soundhouse Tapes in the USA in 2001. If I remember correctly, you had to send a form and $6,66 somewhere and got one of 6,666 CD replicas back by mail. Zoloft is asking if his copy is one of those or if it's a bootleg of it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the US CD come with all four tracks (i.e. the original three plus Strange World)?

I think I heard something like that too, but the site I linked to makes no mention of it, so I wouldn't know...

Perun,

Thanks for the link, greatly appreciated.  The photos are very small, but seem to look like exactly what I have.  I suppose if the bootleg is good enough, there may really be no way to tell.

it does only have the three tracks "Iron Maiden" "Invasion" and "Prowler"

If anyone has any more insight, I'd be more than happy to hear it.

Thanks for the info, I was never aware of this release. I guess it was done with Maiden's consent? Still a bit weird to only do this in USA (out of all places not the most dedicated nation, certainly not in the nineties).

I must admit, I was tracking some copies on ebay a while back. Haven't checked it for some time though.

They are popping up on ebay fairly frequently now.  Selling in the $100 (US) range.  That's where I got my copy.

There are 2 issues with boots. The issue you seem to be interested in is authenticity, from a collector's perspective.

But there's another thing - quality. Part of the reason illegal vinyl boots suck is because they're analog, and every copy means a degradation in audio quality. But CDs and other digital media remove that issue: computers copy digital files perfectly every time.

So is a boot "good enough"? For sound, it should be. For a collection ... I'm not a collector, but I would think not.

It's a matter of principal really.  It looks and sounds great, but, if I'm being sold an original, I want it to be real.  I have no problem with bootlegging (at least when the source is not commercial available), but, if I am going to buy a bootleg, I want to know up front that is what I'm getting.

The main CD was a US release, but I think there may have been a Japanese edition with 4 tracks.

Also regarding the 6,666 copies - I've also heard that it was 666, and also that this was in fact a publicity stunt and that there were about 2,000 copies released.
