Solitary confinement isn't what it used to be...

HANOI (Reuters) - A death-row inmate held in solitary confinement in Vietnam for almost a year is pregnant and is seeking a pardon to give birth, a newspaper reported on Thursday.

The Lao Dong (Labour) newspaper quoted a police doctor as saying tests in September confirmed that convicted heroin trafficker Nguyen Thi Oanh, 39, was then 11 weeks pregnant.

The report said it was the first time that a death-row prisoner had become pregnant in Vietnam and that police were investigating how it had happened.

Oanh's husband was serving a jail sentence at another prison in another province, the newspaper said.

Oanh was due to face a firing squad this year after losing her appeal against the death sentence she received last year for possession of a billion dong ($63,000) worth of heroin.

Trafficking more than 600 grams of heroin in Vietnam is punishable by death or life imprisonment.

Who said that the Immaculate Conception was a myth?  :innocent:

Do you guys believe everything you read on the internet?

If this story is real, it was probably just a prison guard who... well, you know :P

Yes, exactly what I was thinking, Conor. Alternatively it could have been someone in a high position (like in charge of the jail), who well...got an urge, shall we say. They, at any rate, would have had unlimited access.

No, I reckon it was an inmate who delivered food to death-row prisoners.

AARRRGGGHHH FOR THE LAST TIME IT'S NOT IMMACULATE CONCEPTION, IT'S VIRGIN BIRTH! Immaculate conception refers to the Virgin Mary herself... SHE is immaculate, free of sin thus able to be the mother of God, Jesus conception and birth is The virgin birth.

Now I agree with Albie, she could have been raped by one of the guards or it could have been willingly... the investigation will tell us.

Am I the only one who sees the bittersweet irony of a new life appearing in a death cell?

That's poetic!  You should write a song about it.  Seriously!  ;)
How about a spoof on Hallowed By Thy Name?  I think you could pull it off.  :ok:

it's people like that who give people like me and my homies from the cell a bad name

Solitary confinement includes padded walls and white jackets? Aren't you talking about solitary confinement in the context of an asylum, not a jail?

Given the choice I'd choose her kind of solitary confinement over "the old fashioned" kind any day :D Apparently, the only solitary for her is the promise not to be disturbed when she's...ehm...entertaining her visitor. :halo:

Amazing, the two first persons to post couldn't even type the word "rape"...

Anomica, I do know this is a sarcastic thread, but what you wrote made me sick.

To most of you:
Solitary confinement means no visitors and no meetings with any other prisoners. But, even though, she needs to receive food.
What you could have wondered about are the conditions of living in Thailand cells...
Whatever this woman has done, she's actually facing death. And you're joking...

This is sick.

I'm sorry you feel that way by my, admittedly overly sarcastic comment, but since I view capital punishment and life inprisonment as inhuman, I suppose you might say that I use a sick sense of humour as a defence to keep it from coming too close, if you know what I mean (it's hard to explain in English, I find). My views on capital punishment are expressed in another thread but abhorrent (sp?) is a word that comes to mind.

On a serious note: if I was a woman in a cell waiting for death maybe a pregnancy would postpone the sentence? The will to live is in many instances much stronger than most people think. Maybe she decided it was worth it to let a guard rape her, in the hope that she'd get pregnant and thus save her life? Or at least postpone an execution.

My comments were actually based on a follow up story to the original post. I found it on the Reuters own site here.

Apparently, she no longer is. I took a look at Albie's link and according to Vietnamese law her death sentence changes into a life long imprisonment sentence because she's pregnant. Although I'm not sure if spending a life-time in that kind of a jail would be all that desirable. Still, as Anomica said, the will to live is very strong, especially when your life is in danger.

From what I understand, this is the kind of prison in which inmates get raped by the guards, so I'd say a lifetime sentence is not too much better than a death sentence there.
