Sir Stephen Harris?

As much as I hate Metal Hammer, this may add some weight behind the petition.  I personally think they emphasised the wrong reasons for knighting Harris, though.  My view is that, if Bono can get an honorary knighthood for telling other people to give to charity while sending his private helicopter to fetch his hat before a concert, why can't Harris have one, he who has been doing charitable work since 1979?  Plus the music thing...that kind of comes into it somewhere... :P

Honestly how much charity have Maiden done,  besides once in 1979 when the first album was released and the charity gigs for Clive Burr.  And although I'm not familiar with U2,  I believe you're a bit harsh on Bono.  At least he does tell people to do charity,  and participates in events such as Live Aid.

Hear 'N Aid

Rock Aid Armenia

Donating money to Katrina Red Cross (although that was being raised by fans for reasons to do with Ozzfest and $haron)

Any of the charities Nicko supports (I don't know the names)...notice how he doesn't shove that charity down people's throats?

I'm sure I could find more, but these are the first ones that came to mind.  And my bone with Bono is that anyone can tell other people to give to charity...that's not the point of charity, and throwing money at the problem is not going to solve world's poverty, especially while people like Bono hoard their wealth...what about Bill Gates?  At least he's doing something to actively end world poverty (selling off Microsoft when he dies and donating $4.6 bn to cancelling world death), and not lording it over people.  I could tell you to give money to Make Poverty History...does it make me a better person?  Hell no.

That's exactly the problem I have with Bono. He could achieve more by reaching into his deep pockets, than by telling people to give a few quid here and there. All organizing and appearing on Live 8 achieved was to further his own career and boost his own inflated ego.

Funny you should say that, but U2's appearance at Live-Aid in '85 made them into superstars - globally (while Status Quo, the opening act, still remained big in the UK only. ;)) I'm sure U2 could wipe out a large chunk of debt of a small African country without hurting their own finances too much.

Seriously, when you get that rich, how can you spend it all in one lifetime?

On a side note, have you heard the Quo's new album and tour is called "In Search of the Fourth Chord." :D
I would not have believed had I not looked it up myself. As always, the band makes a complete parody of themselves.

Well, if they give me some, I'll see if I can give it a go. :D

Right,  I didn't know about these,  thanks for the info  :ok:.  You may be right about Bono though,  I'm not sure...

Quite possibly the only celebrities that didn't agree to Live 8 just to boost their own careers were Floyd and Bob Geldof, I feel.  Pink Floyd, because they always resisted talks of a reunion, and if they really were so egotistical as to use a charity event to endorse themselves, Waters and Gilmour would be touring together for the extra cash and acclaim that would bring.  Bob Geldof because he's always gone on about Third World poverty, and yet he doesn't seem to be an extravagant spender (or let me put it this way; if he has vast desposits of cash that he doesn't give to charity, he certainly isn't spending it on his appearance! :P).

As for Bono, you may or may not have heard this amusing anecdote...

Bono quieted an audience at a U2 gig recently, and began slowly clapping, once every three seconds.  Over the deathly silence, he intoned, 'Every time I clap my hands, a child in Africa dies'.

One heckler from the middle of the crowd piped up, 'Well stop f**king clapping, then!'

Bono recently set up a charity and made 2 million pounds for people with aids........ Shame he spent 50 million setting it up the twat

That doesn't really speak of twatishness (yes, I just made that up) to me...more of self-importance and idiocy.  If he knew what the price was going to be, he obviously spent it to enhance his own image, when people would think more of him if he just quietly donated the 50m to charity.  Which is being a twat, I suppose.

Oh crap, self-contradictory thoughts...uhh...QED! :innocent:

IRON MAIDEN Bassist On U.K. 'Honors' Petition: Thanks, But No Thanks - May 16, 2007

IRON MAIDEN bassist Steve Harris has commented on the petition by MAIDEN fans to include him in the British government's next honors list.

The petition, which was launched last month, reads: "IRON MAIDEN are often the band that encourage youngsters into rock music; one of the pleasures of a MAIDEN gig is the healthy mix of young and old. Steve Harris, as a very fit, relatively moderate drinker, is a great role model for the younger fans that his band continuously attracts."

U.K.-based music journalist Dave Ling recently spoke to Harris about the petition and was not surprised to learn that Steve finds the whole thing hilarious.

"I'm sure it'll never happen, and if it did I wouldn't want it," Harris said, according to Ling. "It's nice that people might think of me like that, but it probably started as a joke that got out of hand. It's not me. You know me; it's not what I'm about. Imagine if you had to call me Sir all the time. A Crystal Palace fan to a West Ham fan... you wouldn't do it, would you?"
