Simon Dawson is the new drummer

What do we say, what do we do?
You know we are nothing without Nick
Is this the end, don't say it is
Can we give it one more try?

It's the last chance for life
Got to give it our best shot
It's the last chance
We can work it out, we can say goodbye
I don't want to let life die
I'm going to stand up and fight

I think people are being unfairly negative on this. While he's not the big name drummer people were expecting, he's been playing with Steve for a decade and clearly, Steve must think that he's 'locked in' with him.

Now that being said, I've not seen him play any Maiden songs so I've no idea if he's good enough. But I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

I don't think they wanted a big name to dominate the conversation, and it makes a huge amount of sense for Steve to just pick someone low key that he's already fairly locked in with, as they can work together closelyduring the winter/spring downtime to nail the rhythm section 100% in advance of the tour. I'm optimistic that he'll do a fine job holding down the fort without stepping on any toes. And I'm fairly certain Nicko will be on hand to advise if needed. Plus, I suspect he's been in waiting this entire tour while BL shadowed Maiden just in case, so he will have been mentally preparing for it for longer than any other option.

If they were smart, they'd put out a quick clip of him drumming some Maiden songs, preferably with the band, and then leave it 'til the first show. But they seem firm on him being purely a live "fill-in" drummer so I can understand them not wanting to do that, too.

Neither his drum kit nor him as a drummer is for Maiden. Now I think RFYL tour might be their last and definitely don't want any new music with him. I can't believe, two shocks for two days is too much. Steve is taking the easy route for him. We all weren't expecting a big/more recognizable name (that could have played a Maiden song before), but has this guy played Maiden songs before? No perfect choice here, but someone younger would be at least better and logical.

Well at the very least he would look visually adequate with the rest of the boys, because he's more or less old too.
When 90 percent of all legacy band lineups now feature members that could as well be not present on this earth when their first records were released, it looks kinda weird.

Have “big names” played Maiden songs before?

Apparently he did, all throughout the Future Past tour, during soundchecks probably.
Otherwise he wouldn't be announced just now.
