SCOTUS sez my 7-year-old can buy Grand Theft Auto

Reagan did many great things for the US (though I agree that Presidents in general get too much credit/blame for the economy in general).

The bottoming out up to 1982 was too soon to be an affect of his policies, he did not take office until January 1981, and the economy was bouncing back by 1982 and really kicking into gear by mid 1983.  The lowering of some excessive tax rates is what was needed to pump more money into the economy at the time.  The majority of the deficit was defense related and needed at the time after years of neglect.

There are plenty of scholors that give Reagan credit for the Cold War, he policies towards the Soviet Union were correct and hastened their decline.  The fall of the USSR is clearly one of the great moments of the 20th Century.  A quick search comes up this this article, he was the right man at the right time.

The other factor where he deserves credit is turning the US mentality around from the 1970s, which were clearly a low point in the US with a horrible economy, gas shortages, Iranian hostages, price fixing, and the "Days of Malaise".

FDR goes well beyond court packing, though if you want to talk about credit where it is not due, crediting FDR with ending the depression is a clear case of rewriting history (WWII was a much bigger factor than anything he did).

I'll have to read the Slate article.

I definitely agree that Reagan was good for the US's interpretation of itself, but that doesn't mean I think his military or economic policies should be followed. He had a great charisma that he used extremely well.

And yes, FDR was definitely a bit of a crook. What he did was end the Hoover influence on the Depression, and make sure it didn't get too much worse. WW2 was what solved it.

His military policies were right for the time, but should not be followed now.  It is an entirely different world (though it would have been nice if they planes over Libya in the 1980s would have taken Ghadaffi out and France had a firmer stand against him back then).

It is amazing how much the world has changed since he was President, which seems like just yesterday to me.

Always my favorite Beatle :)

John Lennon John Lennon was a Ronald Reagan fan who enjoyed arguing with left-wing radicals, according to his former assistant.

John Lennon was a closet Republican, who felt a little embarrassed by his former radicalism, at the time of his death - according to the tragic Beatles star's last personal assistant.

Fred Seaman worked alongside the music legend from 1979 to Lennon's death at the end of 1980 and he reveals the star was a Ronald Reagan fan who enjoyed arguing with left-wing radicals who reminded him of his former self.

In new documentary Beatles Stories, Seaman tells filmmaker Seth Swirsky Lennon wasn't the peace-loving militant fans thought he was while he was his assistant.

He says, "John, basically, made it very clear that if he were an American he would vote for Reagan because he was really sour on (Democrat) Jimmy Carter.

"He'd met Reagan back, I think, in the 70s at some sporting event... Reagan was the guy who had ordered the National Guard, I believe, to go after the young (peace) demonstrators in Berkeley, so I think that John maybe forgot about that... He did express support for Reagan, which shocked me.

"I also saw John embark in some really brutal arguments with my uncle, who's an old-time communist... He enjoyed really provoking my uncle... Maybe he was being provocative... but it was pretty obvious to me he had moved away from his earlier radicalism.

"He was a very different person back in 1979 and 80 than he'd been when he wrote Imagine. By 1979 he looked back on that guy and was embarrassed by that guy's naivete."

That's not too unsurprising. Lennon was a fantastically interesting person.

Of course, the fellow could be lying too. People do that. I'm not entirely sure it matters now. Perhaps if Lennon had changed his stance publicly, it would have been a huge to-do. Now, it's more like nostalgia.

Who knows, even if he remained a radical lefty, he wrote some good music * :)

* with the exception of some of the with Yoko Ono stuff that was just bad .. though Double Fantasy was not a bad album.

I've never gone out of my way to hear his stuff with Yoko Ono. I believe this is for the best.

I heard they made an album with just primal screams...  :S

Some of their stuff was just horrible, but if you want to give any of it a listen, I would give Double Fantasy a shot .. there is some good stuff on there.
