Sayings

A girl asked a boy if she was pretty.
He said no.
She asked him if he wanted to be with her forever.
He said no.
She then asked him if he would cry if she walked away.
He again said no.
She had heard too much.
She needed to leave.
As she walked away, he grabbed her arm and told her to stay, he said,
"You're not pretty, you're beautiful. I don't want to be with you forever, I need to be with you forever. I wouldn't cry if you walked away, I would die."

Ah!  For upcoming Valentine's day.

Speaking of Valentines day...

"Love is a serious mental disease."

--Plato

Wait, did I spoil it?  :innocent:

That one reminded me of on of my favourite quotes (although it's not Valentine's Day-related):

"The tools which would teach men their own use would be beyond price." -Plato (I think he attributed it to Socrates, though)

"To conquer by sheer force is becoming harder and harder every day, Defensive is getting continuously the advantage of offensive, as we progress in satanic science of destruction."

"Within a few years a simple and inexpensive device, readily carried about will enable one to receive on land or sea the principal news, to hear a speech, a lecture, a song or play of a musical instrument, conveyed from any other region of the globe."

"Our first endeavors are purely instinctive prompting from imagination vivid and undisciplined. As we grow older reason asserts itself and we become more and more systematic and designing. But those early impulses though not immediately productive are of our greatest moment and may shape our very destinies."

Nikola Tesla (1856-1943), a scientist, an engineer, a poet, philosopher, linguist... 'The man who invented the twentieth century.'

"It is in playing safe that we create a world of utmost insecurity." --Dag Hammarskjöld

And since I've started with him, here's one that a teacher read to us in spring 2003, when there was a quiet assembly in school due to the start of the Iraq war:

Hallowed be Thy name, not mine
Thy Kingdom come, not mine
Thy Will be done, not mine

Give us peace in our hearts
Peace with one another
Peace within ourselves
And free us from all fear

Amen

Although I'm not Christian, I was deeply impressed and moved by this quote. Hammarskjöld allegedly wrote those words in his diary just before he embarked on his fatal mission to Katanga. The whole scene, the teacher reading them to all the quiet pupils, was very moving.

"You know that fiction, prose rather, is possibly the roughest trade of all in writing. You do not have the reference, the old important reference. You have the sheet of blank paper, the pencil and the obligation to invent truer than things can be true."

"The most essential gift for a good writer is a built-in, shock-proof shit detector. this is the writer's radar and all great writers have had it."

  Ernest Hemingway

"Entre los individuos, como entre las naciones, el respeto al derecho ajeno, es la paz"  -Benito Juarez-

Translation:  Among the people, and among the nations, respecting the other's rights, means peace.
