Sayings

Post some of the sayings you find interesting or important to know, and especially the ones you know by heart, often remind yourselves of or even live by them. Write the saying and the name of the author, and in case you think the author is not well known explain who he was if you wish.

I'll start with these:

'If you always do what you always did, then you'll always get what you always got.'   -  Ronnie Coleman, 9 times mister Olympia.

'True observation begins when one is devoid of set patterns.'   -    Bruce Lee

'There is no truth. There is only perception.'  -   Gustave Flaubert

"An opinion is not necessarily correct because someone is willing to die for it." - Oscar Wilde

I remember Onhell saying a little saying a while back that I thought was rather good. It's attributed to Gandhi though:

"An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind."

My all time favorite:
"I don't want to achieve immortality through my work, I want to achieve it through not dying".
(Woody Allen)
:notworthy:

But as Forostar would underline, these are quotes and not sayings... :)

I agree with the above extract as it is (including :))

well my all time quote comes from Top Secret movie I think when Nick Rivers says to Hillary Flammons :

"Listen to me Hillary. I'm not the first guy who fell in love with a woman that he met at a restaurant who turned out to be the daughter of a kidnapped scientist only to lose her to her childhood lover who she last saw on a deserted island who then turned out fifteen years later to be the leader of the French underground"

Sayings are in a sense famous quotes.

Don't really have any sayings/quotes, but now I know where to post any :)

I hope you don't speak for me, I just quoted  :innocent:

well an old saying that Bruce borrowed and sang so wonderfull
in the song that Maiden never wrote back in 90s is :

"the road to hell is full of good intentions"

'Put all great teachers in a room, and they'll agree about many things. Put all of their pupils in a room, and they'll argue about everything.'

  Bruce Lee

'There are more people living from cancer, than people dying of cancer.'

2 fun quotes that make me laugh.

I like men with a future and women with a past - Oscar Wilde  :innocent: :P

I don't want to be the member of a club that would accept me as a member - Groucho Marx

There are many ways to skin a cat...    I don't know who said it, but someone on this board is probably going to tell me :D I try to live by it, because I read it as a change of perspective is always good, and there is usually more than one way to do a thing right.

The following two quotes amply summarize my thoughts on government:

1. "When the government's boot is on your throat, whether it is a left boot or a right boot is of no consequence." — Gary Lloyd

2. “The bureaucracy is expanding to meet the needs of the expanding bureaucracy.” -- Unknown

The latter was even a sig at one point.

'You can cut the wool from the sheep many times, but you can skin it only once.'

'Man laughing to another man - a monkey watching himself in the mirror.'    Petar Petrovich Njegosh

Hey Mods, what do you think about making this thread a sticky?

"The state has no business in the bedrooms of the nation."  - Pierre E. Trudeau

"It is the leaders of a country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship...The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country." - Hermann Goering

'The death of one man is a tragedy; the death of millions is a statistic' ~ Joseph Stalin

It makes one wonder; what if Hitler had gotten away with invading Poland and gone on to implement Operation Barbarossa with no war on the Western Front?  Would Britain and France have sided with the USSR...what most people don't realise is that Hitler was not necessarily the greater threat, in the eyes of the Allies.

"Those that can, MUST teach."  :P

"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind
don't matter and those who matter don't mind."
~Dr. Seuss

This is true whether you are 10, 15, 30 or 100 years old.

I disagree. It is this type of hyperindividualism that is a cancer to society. If people didn't care about what others did/said there would be anarchy.

That's not how I interpret the statement.  Taken literally it does not work.  I take it to mean that expressing yourself is important and that you should not repress your thoughts and feelings because someone feels that their opinion is better.  Of course, statements like Dr. Seuss' come in a vacuum and it is up to the individual to feel in the spaces.  That's my point of view.

Was Dr. Seuss a real Doctor? To Wikipedia!!!

EDIT: After checking the all-knowing Wikipedia it turns out he wasn't a real Doctor of anything... so he was a POSER! AAAAAAH
