Actually, Laika was the first animal to do an orbital flight, but unfortunately there was no planned way to carry the poor dog on Earth.

You mean the dog is still up there? What if it's still alive? What if it became abducted by an alien race?  :ninja:

Actually, the spaceship Laika was travelling in re-entered the Earth's atmosphere last week.  Here is a picture from the momentous occassion:

Is it NATO? I believe it started in 1949. Or is that too obvious?

Of course, considering the level of these questions, it's probably some obscure alliance between X and Y that's been in force the last 500 odd years ;)

This is not something silly like the British Army? I know that Scotland and England have been their own sovereignty in the past and unified many years ago. Also, Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland has now some sort of independence from England (Scotland, however, has been passing its own laws for some time before they had their own parliament).

The Anglo-Portuguese Alliance? It's still in force via NATO, as wisely Anomica suggested.
Makes sense, Portugal is the only country in (I believe) Europe that us Brits have not been at war with!
I guess this link will answer you question, AbandOn. It talks of two dogs (Belka and Strelka) that returned to Earth alive and well. They also had 40 mice and 2 rats with them.

Right answer  :)
Here's the entire history of russian space dogs, for those who are interested.  :P

If Duke can't answer it, I doubt anyone can. As for me, I didn't even know there was more than one battle.

The Battle of El Alamein is usually divided into five phases, consisting of the break-in (October 23-24), the crumbling (October 24-25), the counter (October 26-28), Operation Supercharge (November 1-2) and the breakout (November 3-7). No name is given to the period from October 29 to the 30th when the battle was at a standstill.

Damn I love Wikipedia.

Which is the only currently existing independent country in the world that was named after its founder?

Could it be Liechtenstein, since the country is named after the Liechtenstein dynasty which united the countries of Schellenburg and Vaduz to make a new one?
