During the acoustic intro of Talisman, Janick played the intro on an acoustic on a stand while still having his electric over his shoulder.
 
During the BNW tour H started on the stage alone with Nicko, and he played the intro riff to The Wicker Man without the rest of the band.

Dave did indeed play guitar solos on his own in the early 80's all the time (e.g. RiR), with just Nicko out on stage with him. Would this count as "Maiden have played live with less than 10 strings"? Naw, & it's not what I had in mind; but Cried will take this as the best answer! :D

OK, so it wasn't something like Smith with a double neck (12 strings), Murray (6), Harris (4), Gers (6) = 28 strings. And then Bruce had an acoustic as well?

Or worse - Eddie was "playing" a guitar.

Maybe (at least) two people played with double strings (12 strings), during Journeyman for example? Just a wild guess.
