Rules are here.

This is my favorite Metallica song. I like ballad-like beginning, instrumental choruses and especially main riff of the second part of the song (when it speeds up).

IMO this song is to Metallica, what Hallowed Be Thy Name is to Maiden or Beyond The Realms Of Death to Judas Priest.

10/10 :shred:

This song is my 11th favourite song of all time! The intro is incredible, one of my favourite ever, verses are great and the soloing is incredible. Great lyrics too.

Also that riff is just amazing! And the last verse is great (death greets me warm, now I must just say goodbye...)

Wow, you have chosen some fantastic songs so far! Stargazer is in my top 25 too, maybe even top 20 :D

I prefer this to Sanitarium but it still lacks that extra something to make it more than 8.

From the slow, beautiful melody and riffs that simply build the song, to the last, final and apocalyptic moment - this is a masterpiece. One of Metal's most emotional songs.

10.

Add me to the list of those who think this is the band's best.
Quintessential Metallica — everything they do well is in this song.

Not in My Metallica Top 15 and it's my least favourite from the 3 great ballads (One is first, Sanitarium is second, Fade to Black is third) but still is a 10. A great intro and a great ending section. Solo is cool but the backing rhythm of the solo is the best thing about this song if you ask me.

I don't know why, but I never really liked this song as much as other people. I don't really like any ballad type Metallica songs for that matter, except for One. 7/10

8/10, A very good song, having said that it is not my favourite track on the album, that would be Creeping Death followed by The Call Of Ktulu both 10's easy.

I heard someone say he wanted this played at his funeral.  Agree that this one stands with "Master of Puppets" and "One" as Metallica's masterpieces, and is probably my favorite of the three.  Still, it's no "Stargazer"...  9/10

I was never much of a Metallica fan in the 80's, and I'm even less of one now. Pretty good tune though, with some great guitars. 7.

Didn't even see this thread until now. Anyway 10/10 for sure. Some of the best lyrics Hetfield has ever written combined with one of the best solos Kirk has ever done. The almost Maiden like harmonies in the solo section really are that great.

Looks like I forgot about this one.

I'll have the negative bit first: This is the first instance of Metallica's whiny lyrics that cripple their releases nowadays (among other things). They are just so overblown on the darkness factor that it's hard to take them seriously (a bit like Meat Loaf's attempts at writing songs for Generation X).

Musically, on the other hand, this song is amazing. The songwriting is pure magic, and you can just tell what a fantastic band they once were: Lars was actually a brilliant drummer before he started hitting pots and pans, and James was a charismatic singer before he introduced his polished melodic edge. Metallica used to be heavy without bashing all their instruments into one single, indistinguishable mess (unfortunately, this would already start with Master of Puppets). I renounce what I said before, and state that Ride the Lightning is, in fact, my favourite Metallica album. Such energy, such electricity, such magic. And this isn't even the best song on that album (Creeping Death is). A high 8/10.

Fade to Black is just 6th on my Ride the Lightning list  (Creeping Death, Ride the Lightning, The Call of Ktulu, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Fight Fire with Fire)
