You may remember this band from a previous random song thread that was also opened by me :D

The song from that thread had only harsh vocals and also was very fast and agressive, but this song is totally different. It's slow and melodic, focuses on keyboards rather than guitar and features CLEAN VOCALS ONLY. Vocals are perfect... How this guy manages to sound so aggressive and beastly when growling, and so soulful and emotional when singing is amazing :ok:

10/10 from me :edmetal:

It's alright. Not even the clean vocals do it for me really though. This band just isn't my cup of tea I suppose. It has great melodies though. 7/10

I like this one. Very emotional composition.
I think the band deliberately went for deadened, remote production on the vocal to heighten the feeling of isolation.
While I respect that, I would have preferred the vocal to be more up-front.
I feel like I'm watching the singer from outside a rain-splattered window. The music is so haunting, I want get inside the room.

I am afraid I don't like this.

Yaaiks. The voice reminds me of Rick Ashley (but way more monotone), and I don't like the dragging (whining) chorus. The music is pretty OK but the vocal melodies are not imo.

The singer does sound kinda like Rick Astley. And I'm not a big fan of his voice. But the song isn't that bad. 7/10

Not a big fan, but it depends on the execution and the song itself as well, of course.
When I (dis)like one, I always explain why.  :)

You know what! First, I actually wanted to say a cross between Astley and Barlow. So, yes, I heard that too!  :)

And it's not per se the sound of his voice; the melodies he sings are also important. Maybe I still need to get used to it first. It's just a first impression. No intention to spoil the pleasure here.

I don't think I explained myself very well.
When I said the vocal should be more up front, I didn't mean I really liked this vocal performance. I meant the vocal part doesn't do the song justice.
Check out Bruce Dickinson's Change of Heart — it's a song with a similar kind of feel, but Bruce's vocal makes its special.
I was giving the band the benefit of the doubt in saying the vocal part was an artistic choice, but maybe it's just because this singer ain't Bruce.
(And he does kinda sound like Rick Astley :innocent:)

Bought the song by the way, and a handful more from these threads.
Thanks to all for expanding my musical horizons.

This song appeared on the band's fourth album, called Projector. Their previous albums had no keyboards or clean vocals at all, and were hugely inspired by Maiden - songs were mostly based on Maiden-like melodies. On Projector, they started including keyboards and clean vocals, and songs relied more on riffs than melodies. On later albums, keyboards remained an integral part of the band's sound, but clean vocals which appeared on almost every song on Projector, appeared only on a few songs after it.

Ahh I think that's the only album I've ever heard by them (borrowed from a friend around the time it came out; but I forgot most of it). Thanks, cool to check it out again.  :ok:

Rick Astley! That's beautiful Foro! I think it sounds more like Nickleback... there's a band you don't want to be compared to. Generic ballad... it does nothing for me. 4.
