Random Song: Battle Scar

Rush fans will know Neil has co-written lyrics to a couple songs (most notably Tom Sawyer) with a guy named Pye Dubois.
Dubois was the lyricist for a Canadian band called Max Webster that had some minor success over here in the late '70s.
In 1980 both bands gathered in one room in a circle around a producer who conducted them through this slow-rolling piece of what Neil called "Wagnerian tumult."

They just don't make them this slow and powerful anymore.
(Sorry if I'm jumping the queue on this one, but I just rediscovered this song today after a long absence and I had to share. It's been rocking my world and wanted to hear how well-known (and liked) it was.)

When I saw the title I thought of some cheesy Manowar (inspired) song but this is something entirely else, hehe.

To be honest: I had no clue that members of Rush collaborated with other artists (apart from own projects).
This is interesting to know and to hear. Peart's drum fills are very recognizable! I don't find the song itself so astounding, I give it a low 7.

Universal Juveniles was Max Webster's best album... bummer that Kim Mitchell decided to get more radio friendly with his solo stuff. This is a song I haven't heard in ages... I had the L.P. but was never able to find it on C.D. Battle Scar was actually second to "Check" for my album favourites. Both great tunes. Thanks for stirring up a forgotten one mckindog! High 8...

Sometimes you test for echo and get a great big meh...
These threads have really died off. Where'd all the young guys go?

I'm betting some of the youth have little interest in the more obscure fossil tunes that we were weaned on, mckindog. Odd, because I see a lot of admiration of the more well known older acts like Zep, Floyd, and Rush. THIS IS EQUALLY GREAT STUFF, KIDDIES! On the flipside, some of the random songs by newer bands that I'm being introduced to here leave me scratching my head at what the appeal is... I feel like a curmudgeon rating some of this stuff with 2's and 1's, but grunting, growling vocals, lack of melody, and guitar work that is, ahem, questionable, leaves me cold musically. Generation gap, man.

At least we all agree on the band that really matters...

Interesting, yeah I guess for me I would rather be rating and discussing songs that I already know. The occasional tune I have to look up is also great and it has introduced me to some new music but if I have to look up every new song I begin to lose interest a bit. Just my 2 cents :)

Also its very interesting what you said in that last part, I gather you were talking in part about the Opeth song I chose, well I find them extremely melodic, with awesome riffs, which sets them apart from other death bands. The growls took a while to come to me and still are coming to me, as I'm still relatively new to Opeth and don't have all their albums. But I am starting to find myself enjoy them.

Agree with both of you.
I started these threads with the idea that most of us would know most of the songs being posted.
I think we all kinda forgot 40-something Canadians and teenage Serbs may not have the best idea of what constitutes "well-known" for each other.
(Although I bet Taker was talking more about the Stone track than the Opeth one) ;)

I knew this one was probably obscure, but given the large number of Rush fans on the site, I thought it would be of interest.
Guess I was wrong.

Anyway, keep 'em coming. If I'm not posting, it doesn't mean I'm not reading, it just means I've got nothing interesting to say.

Foro, I guess you're up, but maybe we should just open the thread-starter role to anyone wanting to discuss a new track, max one new thread a day.

Y'know Jupz, outside of the growly vocals I think that Opeth has some pretty good tunes. Very talented band, and that guy is actually a great singer (when he's not doing that grunting shit, but that's only to my ears). Haven't voted on that one yet, but will...

I am interested. I'm really interested in hearing new music. This song? I like it. It's pretty good. 8/10.

Oh and the main reason why I like Stone so much is the great guitar work. Janne's vocals took some time to get into, but now I like them well enough. Meat Mincing Machine probably isn't a very good song for introducing someone to the band, I guess.

Yeah the growls took a while for me to like but I eventually got them :) His clean voice is amazing IMO, and he has one of the best growls I've heard.

Finally got around to listening to this song, it doesn't really strike much of a chord with me. The slow feeling doesn't really suit the song IMO. 4/10.
